I own a 336 that I purchased in the mid to late 50's. It has been responsible for many deer kills, both muleys and white-tails. Cannot find fault with it, and it's been a great companion over all these years.

I've owned both, but now only have 336s.

The older 94 s were great guns, the new ones are still decent but have a lose and cheap feel if that makes sense. Try both you'll see what I mean.

Have both. Model 94 from the early 50's & a Marlin from the 60's. Botha re 30-30. Everybody should have a Winchester 30-30 with open sights just for the fun of it, The Marlin does have a scope. Botha re used every year for deer hunting and both have taken their share of game.

If you want a collector get a pre-64 Winchester. If you like tradition, get a pre-64 Winchester. If you want a practical rifle to use get the Marlin.

I know just what you mean. When I was shopping for a 0.357mag carbine, I went to a store that had both Win. and Marlin lever rifles to compare the difference. My impression was that the Win. seemed like a barrel and receiver with a bunch of other stuff strapped on while the Marlin felt like a single, solid unit. I ordered the 1894C Marlin based on that.

As far as the 336 goes, don't forget that rifle is also available in .35 Rem. I would not overlook that caliber. The gun reviewer John Taffin did an article about a year ago on Marlins and was extolling the virtues of the .35 Rem. as a hunting cartridge.
