Marlin 12 Ga Number 42 Shotgun. any tips on how to use this old thing?
I made a post in 2007 asking for information on it. and while searching Google i found the old post and to my dismay no one had posted a damn thing in it so here i am again making another post in an attempt to get some info.
Now i did find a website that had safety checks straight from marlin to make sure that everything still worked and after running through the 6 or so checks everything works perfectly. so after that i took a 12 gage shell and ripped everything out of it except the firing pin and test the gun. it worked just like its supposed to.
So what kind of Cleaning stuff would i need to clean this shotgun? and if i wanted to fire it what kind of shells would be best to use? any other info on this weapon would help also.
I suppose standard shotgun cleaning stuff is what to use; I believe that the model 42 was like the others and stripped easily for cleaning. If you haven't already stripped it, you might find that the barrel thread is left hand, I believe the earlier models were. If you don't know how to strip it ask and I'll try and explain it.
I believe it was chambered for 2 1/2 & 2 3/4" cartridges and the magazine held 5 or 6 cartridges.
What barrel length do you have? 26, 28, 30 or 32"?
How about posting some pictures with all the relevant stamps/proof marks on it?
