| A few lever action questions
Hey guys I've got a Marlin 336W 30-30. I gotta admit I think I am in love with lever action rifles. I kinda want to buy every single lever action Marlin available(not going to, but I would like to). First Question: Is the Leverevolution ammo really good, and does it shoot well in every gun, or are certain guns off limits? Second Question: What is the advantage to having a lever action chambered in a revolver round such as .357/.38spl? Third Question: With all these Marlins' chambered in revolver rounds why don't they have .454 Casul/.45LC? Fourth Question: Does the Marlin "Cowboy"(the really long one) shoot way better than a regular short Marlin? Thanks in advance |

Second, for Cowboy Action shooting matches....and, if you own a .357 revolver, you can share ammo back & forth...and, it'll drop a deer or hog just about like anything else at up to 100 yards Third, the 1894 Cowboy is in .45 Colt, or .44 Mag/.44SPL, or .357 Mag/.38 spl As far as .454 Casull...buggered if I know...ask 'em Fourth, the 1895 Cowboy is in .45/70 gov't...and if you didn't have a nice long barrel, it'd be even more like a mortar shot than it already is It also allows them to have a nice long 9-round mag

Ok thanks for answering my questions. My 336 seems like it can hold more than 6 rounds in that big tube under the barrel, is there some kind of plug in there like I've heard some shotguns have?

The only question I can answer is the first one, The Leverevolution ammo is excellent in Marlin .30-30's I also have a 336 variation. I wasnt sure how it would compare so I bought a box, along with a box each of 4 different brands. So far my top 2 favorites are the Leverevolution ( some extended range to the tune of about 175 yards and accuracy) and Federal Power-Shok ( good accuracy out to 100 yards.).

So the Marlin can handle the 45-70 .444, and other very powerful rifle rounds, but not .454 Casul or .500S&W. Are the magnum revolver rounds really more powerful, because I would not have thought that they were? Not that I really want one or anything I'm just wondering why they ain't makin' one, because .454/.45 would just be a nice compliment to their line up. I guess I'm going to have to pick up some of that fancy Hornady ammo.

| Plugs are removable, and are only found in shotgun magazines anyway.

| big shrek All the XLR Marlin leveraction have Ballard type rifleing where 336's have micro grove rifleing. So your saying the Hornady ammo works just as well in barrels with micro-grove rifleing. ? Thats good to know.

Bearing in mind that usually you've got to try several different .30-30 ammo's to find what works best in any particular rifle...much as you do with any other caliber. Example, my Marlin 25MN in .22WMR likes Hornady V-Max (33-grain)...but it LOVES Federal Game-shoks (50-grain) & CCI Maxi-Mag+V (30-grain)... Perversely, my Grendels prefer the Hornady & don't like the Federal Game-shoks. My Marlin 1895-SBL in .45-70 likes Federal Fusion, but it LOVES Hornady Lever-evolution... You never know what'll shoot the tightest groups until you try EVERYTHING...just keep a Shooter's Logbook on every rifle you own...and notate what works great, and what doesn't In That Particular Rifle's Logbook Folks freak out about Micro-groove because they're not used to having to test a few types of ammo to find the best one...but it's kinda what you HAVE to do with any fine precision rifle...find what works best, and keep using it

^ Spot on !! It's trial and error, even when you reload. Sometimes it may take a year to find the right recipe or commercial ammo that wrings out the last bit of accuracy from your rifle.
