Lot's a questions about this one; what was the code? were all the serial numbers matching? the scope mount was matching but what about the scope itself? What kind of price was the guy asking for the one that you saw?

A veritable cottage industry has developed, around these "sniper" Mausers and Mosins. Some of them are so cunningly crafted that they can fool even the experienced collector. I probably wouldn't be able to tell a well done fake from the real thing, and would be very careful about shelling that kind of money for it. If it's real, the price isn't too bad - would've been nice if it had the original scope too. But, you would be advised to have a knowlegable expert check it out first.

If he gets no suckers at the gunshow, it'll end up on eBay. I've seen some ridiculous stuff there, for sure.

Big Dog is exactly correct, some of the questions that I was asking was to try and get an idea of if this was one of those "Too good to be true Mausers". Lately with Mausers these have been those with rare production codes (these are the letters and or numbers on the receiver ring; ce, ax, bnz, dou, etc) or Death's Head and Single Rune marked rifles that are "Vet bringbacks" but very expensive. There has been a lot of discussion amoungst knowledgeable individuals about the very large number of faked pieces seen at shows lately that have been restamped, etc. I have backed way off these as of late. If you are looking at one it would be a very good idea to bring along someone very knowledgeable or get Law's book to become familiar with the proper date code configuarations. The one at the show could be real but I doubt for the condition and price that I would chance it.
