Czech this out!

Welp, Dunhams did another big sale and I got my hands on a Czeck BRNO 98/22 for $75. Came with a bayonet and lots of cosmoline. Have to say this is my first experience with the stuff. Bolt it pretty darn stinkin stiff, anyone know why and how to improve it? Bore is good.

I figured I want a big long barreled rifle that can take a common bayonet, and it's good to have a hunting-legal (non-semi-auto centerfire) rifle that I don't mind getting dirty.

What tips can you guys give me? What ammo is good and bad and why? Thanks!

Thumbs up

Good going, the 98/22 is one of the best Mauser rifles. Made for Turkey during their 1922 war with some hostile neighbors - made in Germany then shipped to Turkey. It should have the rear sight markings in Arabic.

Here's a site addy to the Guns Network LLC regarding bolt disassembly. A good scrubbing and lubing should loosen it up nicely. Here's where that funky round thingy in the buttstock comes into use.

http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/showth...threadid=97702

These rifles should do alright with the hot Turkish 8mm loads. The Turks used a lighter bullet than most 8mm, so if it shoots high, try some Yugo or other standard 8mm with the heavier bullets.

I was thinking of going for a scout type scope setup, anyone know what's out there in that regard?

diesel fuel is supposed to be one of the best things to use to get rid of cosmoline

take the bolt apart and get all the cosmoline out of it, that will probably smooth it up some.

Big Dog is right about the ammo. It will handle the Turk stuff but out of the 4 Mausers I have, it is the least accurate and also the least reliable. Try anything other than the Turk unless its just to have fun and shoot!

It's gonna need a good cleaning, anyone know how to get it apart and cleaned up? I'd love to make it shine. It's solid but pretty gunky.

If you need a link for taking the bolt apart:

www.surplusrifle.com

Have fun...any of the old mausers are fun and the 98 is the grand daddy of the mauser actions.

Incidentally, that site is great for other rifle/bolt disassemblies.

I've printed every one he has instructions for that I have and they have sure come in handy......yepper....fer sure.

If I use gasoline to clean it, which I never have before, how should I make sure it doesn't catch on fire when I shoot it like many have experienced?

if you use gasoline, do it OUTSIDE!!! and away from any possible ignition source. scrub until all the gunk is off. then strip down the rifle and clean some more. air dry, or use compressed air if you have it. let stock sit out until all gas has evaporated. oil and reassemble.

i have never heard of a gun catching fire from a gas bath, unless it was still dripping with gasoline, and the moron shot it.

others will suggest mineral spirits, but i use gasoline with no problem

Thanks, I would think all it would need is to evaporate, but after hearing people's reports, wanted to be sure.

1 don't use gasoline... Use diesel or keroscene.. Forget the scope, at least for now... This gun will shoot better than you can see.... Most scopes end up being to high, and drilling holes in the reciever is hard to get right... Any fool can drill and thread holes in these, but getting it right is a one time deal. I reccomend you have that done by a real gunsmith or not at all...

I have a great book which was about 35 bucks, and it deals with this type of Mauser only..... I will read the on line stuff, and see if it is good.... That will take a bit....

You can get into some problems with the bolt, but it has been about 2 years since I played with mine.. That pin spring has snot.... it can be the devils own work dealing with that if you don't have the info....

Lemme go read thew stuff on line and I will get back to ya... Mac

ps: I have a K-98 Yugo and shoot turk all the time.. All I did was swap the front sight over from a M-96 which is about 10mm taller (3/8") This gun makes me look I can really shoot too..

Both are really me.. The warrior was for a flick made in CDN on the War of 1812...

The bike one is what happened after 9-11....The face of Liberty is on the top of the tank about 3/4 size to a human head... As big as there was room for.... Sorry to be so far off topic... Mac
