Tracking down Serial #'s

Where can i track down the Serial # from my 1942 byf ? I know it will be difficult if not impossible, but i figure they kept very good records. at least find out what Division or what part of the military it was issued to. thanks in advance
p.s. I already know about the codes and where it was made etc... just that it would be cool to know where the rifle may have seen service. thanks

I think I remember some guys over at gunboards talking about this a way back, I don't remember what the final outcome was but I think one guy got in touch with someone in Germany about ser # records. You can give the question a try there in the 98k Mauser forum: http://www.gunboards.com/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=4
Let us know if you find out anything.
