| Super Moderator ![]() | I was trying to take down and clean up my Czech M98/22 last week and just got madly aggressive. I sprayed that Rem oil on like there was no end to it, worked the takedown springs back and forth, pryed here, yanked there, and got it all apart except for the rear receiver/trigger-group/mag well screw. Couldn't get it to budge at all, period. I tried penetrating oil, I tried hitting it, I tried everything I could think of. Not one bit of progress. I messed up the head of that screw pretty badly trying. Then, prying the barrel up, I think I pulled it too far and bent the screw so that it would be even more impossible to get out. Well that was the last straw. I bent it back and forth and back and forth until sure enough, I got the thing apart, leaving the threaded part of the screw in the rear of the upper receiver. So I can still go ahead cleaning up the metal and restoring the stock. All I can say is that it really needs it, but seems like a great rifle underneath, except for some nasty pitting on the underside of the barrel. I found the screw I need at E-gunparts.com (Numrich). All I need now is to get that stub out. I did manage to drill through it with a 1/16" or so bit. Any ideas? And any other sources of the much needed rear receiver screw?

| If you have a buddy who works in a machine shop/auto shop, slip him a six-pack and have him use an "easy-out" to remove the pesky screw shank. Uh . . . give him the beer AFTER the job. Or, drill the hole out and install a helicoil. There's more than one way to skin a Mauser. Added a bit later: Papa G's got no sense of adventure! Now, if it was a fine Remchester, yep - take it to a 'smith. The ol' Mauser is going to be quite a learning experience. Y'all may find out how hard a broken Easy-out can be!

| Ever since George told him that the French and Indian war was officially over and he'd best take his squirrel rifle back home, PapaG has never regained his sense of adventure...... I agree with both suggestions. Try an easy out or drop her off at a smith's. |

| BR, I'm still not quite sure which screw you might be talking about but I would think a good gunsmith would have a good assortment of screws. However, once I found it nearly impossible to find a small screw and then I found it at a local hobby store. They had a huge assortment of screws for RC (radio control) repairs, both on the engines and mainframe construction. Mine didn't need to be machine strength so that wasn't a factor and I'm not sure all of their's were. Just a thought.

| Super Moderator ![]() | Numrich has 'em. I'll order one as soon as GunGeek can find out exactly what part he needs for one of his guns so we can order together and save on shippin.

| Hey BR, either try an easy-out screw extractor as suggested above or - if you can find a reverse twist drill (my favorite trick!) try drilling it the next size up. The trick with the reverse bits and a reversable drill is that more times than not the broken screw will spin out while your drilling it for an extractor! Later, Max

| Good point, MAX7.62. BR, if Numrich falls through, Brownells has those Mauser action/trigger guard screws for about $5 per set. |
