| Accuracy problem
Trying to figure out what is going on with my K98. My shots are all over the paper at 50 yards. I just can't seem to get a consistant grouping. I am trying to determine the cause by process of elimination. The possoble causes that I can determine are: a) It is me and I can't hit the broad side of a barn. b) Poor ammo. c) Rifling is wore out or gummed up. d) Problem with scope and/or scope mount. In order to rule out some of these factors I shot 20 rds using my K98 which is mounted in a synthetic aftermarket stock with an integral scope mount. and then 20 rds using the same type ammo in my Czech VZ-24. The K98 shot all over the paper with no consistancy at all. The VZ-24 using open iron sites produced a nice 6" grouping. I feel pretty sure that I can rule out (a) and (b). I have taken the K98 out of the synthetic stock and have put it back in it's original wood stock. If I can get a good consistant grouping with open iron sites then the only thing left is the optics. Won't know until I can get back out to the range. Can a worn barrel cause that kind of innacuracy? Can you buy replacement barrels for the K98?

Well Sir, your on the right track. Compare open sights with scoped results first. Try "different" ammo next. There are alot of guns out there with pitted, worn out rifling that shoot well. the groups are typically just a tad more open, but consistant.

look rael good at the last inch of the rifeling i have had a few mausers that i had to have the last two inches cut off and re-crowned and this fixed the problem.

I had a K98. It shoot about 8" high and to the right, but it was consistent. (Traded it!) Here is my 2 cents worth - If you are using the aftermarket stock I am thinking about, it has the scope mount built onto the stock. If that is the case, make sure you have the action bedded and securly tighted (Option d above - kinda). Also, don't forget some of that surplus ammo is corrosive. That might also account for the differce from past groupings if you used it without cleaning real good afterwards. Goodluck |

I agree with SilverRun. A dirty barrel would be the first thing to check. If you arent sure that the rifling is "gummed up" then clean it! Even my most worn Mauser shoots consistant. Its about a 6-8" group at 100 yards but always hits the paper. If it doesnt, its operator error. |

what is the ammo you are using many of the surplus rounds are junk and don't offer a good load. Try checking out commercial loads and report back Also check the crown

If you do determine that the problem is the barrel and you want to replace it, I believe I saw an ad in Shotgun News that GunPartsInc. has some.
