K98 Mausers

I started collecting the Russian captured K98s. Is there another collector out there? Up to this point I have been lucky of the condition of each rifle. Of course, the Russians are great ones to pack them with cosmoline, and you have to clean them. My collecting of military rifles has a catch, and that is I shoot them. None of these pieces are wall hangers.

I was about to make a post about K98s. Sence I have just started buying Mil. Surp. rifles, I guess I can't call myself a collector officially( I only have a Finn M-39 so far). But a K98 is the first Mauser on my list. Where did you buy yours at?
If I have enough money, and they still have some left, I want to get one from AIM. I will probably just get the defaced K98, with the markings gone. That's ok by me.
I am like you, if I have it I am going to shoot it. It's useless if you don't.

I bought mine frome Cole's. $200 VERY good bore, great stock. lots of Nazi stamps on all the parts ( gotta have the Nazi stamps ! ) shot great with no need to re-sight. I bought a few different rifles from Cole's at the Knob Creek Machine gun Shoot directly from the German guy that get's them from over seas. Highly recommended. get one with the Eagle stamps ! for sure.

Hello Indy and all,
I too like military weapons. I have a Russian Moisin Nagan 91-30 that will hit a coke can at a hundred yards every time. I also have one of those Russian capture k98s. It is in good condition and also a great shooter. I have seen a lot of military bolt actions at gun shows for great prices. I bought my Moisin Nagan for $119.00 at a gun show and it is in mint condition. My Mauser I ordered from one of those outfits in shotgun news for a couple of hundred.
A buddy also has a k98 Mauser. We took them to a public range a while back and sat side by side and raised the dickens with those mausers. A couple of guys there were impressed with the mausers and the Moisen Nagant.
I had a Jap 7.7 one time that would also hit a coke can at a hundred yards consistantly. Those old WWI and WWII rifles were made for durablilty, power, distance, and accuracy. I laugh at some friends who spend hundreds of dollars on modern hunting rifles and then are afraid to bump them or get a scratch on them.

I apologize for being so late in responding. I purchased my first 98 at Coles while they were at Knob Creek. The next two were purchased mail order from SOG. The first one cost about $200 and I picked it out from a rack. I must say with all the cosmoline it was hard to really tell which was a good buy. Luck was on my side that day because it was a good one. The two from SOG were in better condition especially the more expensive collector mauser.
Coles K98s are in good condition, but it would be best to pay the extra money for a handpicked one. Please understand I collect military rifles, but they are for shooting. If it doesn't work I don't buy it. In fact, I took a collectable 1903 Springfield back because the serial number was below 800,000. It was great looking, but my eyes were more valuable.
I have been collecting for several years, and it's like a disease. The Mosins, Yugos, Czechs, Persians, Swedes, Germans, Swiss, and even the U.S. rifles are in my group. My wife just bought a new BMW suv and selling my rifles could have bought one. She just doesn't have any idea. I made a list by serial number of them in case I come to a sudden end. Also, a couple of friends and I have an agreement to help each spouse when they must be sold.
I would recommend each of you make a list with a reasonable value placed on you firearms. I have seen to many greedy store owners who want 50%. A friend of mine died and a store owner gave his wife $200 for a Weatherby shotgun that had never been taken out of the box.

I'm starting to get the Mauser bug...maybe a nice M48 Yugo...see them alot lately...not too bad of a price.
Could still kick myself in the arse for getting rid of a Swede 96 that I bought back in the early 80's at Woolworth's for $69.95 in Ex.cond!!!!
Traded it for C.B. equipment!!!!!

I don't have a Kar98K yet, but I'm planning to get one soon. My shooting buddy got a decent one from SOG, dated 1942. One of the scrubbed Russian Captures, so no waffenamts, unfortunately. But he wanted a shooter, not a collector. It's a real mix-master too - no matching numbers and the hardware is a mix of forged and stamped. I think the Rooskies built it from the parts bin. Shoots good though.

My Mausers are:
1) Yugo M48A in 8mm.
2) Turkish Model 1903 in 8mm (bubba'd stock - restoration soon!).
3) Spanish M43 Airforce Model in 8mm - also bubba'd but now in a Brazilian '08 stock shortened to fit, so it looks military.
4) Spanish FR8 in 7.62X51 NATO. Very accurate!

My favorites are a Persian mauser and a 96/38 Swede. It's hard to understand why the 6.5 x 55 Swede is so accurate. The mild recoil and the ability to easily get a great grouping at 300yds is amazing. The workmanship in the Persian mauser is fantastic. I may get another one before they disappear.
Of course, when it comes to Mosins, I have three M39s. One VKT looks almost new and it shoots like a new one too. I have many Mosins but the 39s are by far the best. The Finns improved the basic Russian military rifle.
The Turks have been the best buy to start a collection. They are cheap and accurate. The Turkish army pounded the British at Gallipoli with these rifles during WWI. Everyone should get one before they are gone.

Trekkie, the first pic came up, and that is one very nice Mauser! I love the wood - nice "tiger striping" effect. The features I can see indicates that it is a Gewehr 98, the first major version of the Large-ring Model 98 series.
Long barrel, Lange-Vizier (long-range) rear sight, the particular "quick-disconnect" sling mounts. The basic WWI issue model.

What markings does it have? It should have the maker's name on the left-side of the receiver. If we are lucky, it may have a crest on top of the front receiver ring - that would show what country used it.

You have a nice collectible Mauser there! Please don't ever try to sporterize it! You could get enough from a collector for it to buy a good sporter.

Have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

BigDog, It has Gew. 98. on the left side of the reciever. The font is in an old antique form, so I'm not sure if the w is an m or not. The front reciever ring has what looks like a crown with AMBERG under it and 1916 under that. There are some markings that I do not recognize on the right side of the front reciever ring. They are small, almost letters in appearance, each with a crown above it. There are also a couple of stamped markings on the stock, but I cannot make them out.

I'm a collector who collects shooters, and my 1941 K98 has been outfitted with a 20 round trench mag (relax, I can put back on the original). She has all her waffenmarks but a couple of minor pieces have been replaced (%90 original serial numbers)
