K98 - is this for real ?

So I stop at the store on my way home to pick up some paper & primers and I see this mauser in the corner. Now I don't know much about mausers - have a couple RC K98s & yugos & such but generally inexperienced. So I ask about it and the kid at the store didn't know either but it had a note saying "J.P. Sauer 1939 mauser". Said Mod 98 on the receiver. The stock was in like new condition, had a receiver mounted weaver scope. The stock was not like a K98 stock - i.e. the grip seemed narrower, the holes in the stock were plugged and instead had swivels at the bottom (say like a vz24). And what was strange was that it had waffen marks all over, including the bolt. Sling was aftermarket/not original. Had original H type bayo lug. It seemed refinished (not cold blued sort of parkerized). Not that I wanted to buy it or anything but was this one of those fake germans I keep hearing about ? Or just a mauser action refinished & stuck in a different stock ? Bubba's handiwork ? (but seemed better than a bubba job and the stock was full length)

if it has a weaver scope, it aint the real deal. shooter value only. sporterized/bubbaized

yup - that's true but I was wondering if the action was real - way too many pretty waffen marks. Why would someone do it to such a pretty K98

Probably bubba'd by someone who did'nt know any better or when the rifles were easier to find/cheaper.

Definitely bubba'd, and thos WaffeAmt stamps are sold by a few vendors. The Spanish Pistol enthusiasts are having a hard time finding Genuine Nazi-marked pistols - too many fakes running around!
This rifle could be an okay shooter, and you can pretty easily find a real Kar98k stock to put it in. Or sporterize it properly! But I wouldn't trust it's provenence. If the price isn't bad, and I want a good representative K98 - I might go for it (expecting to change that bogus stock!).
A J.P.Sauer action from '39 - tempting! Good company.

Okay, I looked at it again on the way to the range & the bore is pretty and it seems refinished right. Where can I score a good K98 stock set ? Numrich ? This gun makes me want to bring it home & put it in the right stock The maroon tinged hunting sling on it looks hideous

found some RC stocks at militarygunsupply.

yup - so I'm getting it & put it in the right stock. The gun doesn't have any import marks either - everything but the bolt matches. K98s should not be treated like this

Thumbs up

Sounds like a good plan! I love to hear of a good milsurp restored to it's issue style glory! I've rescued a few myself, and it's a good feeling.
Sometimes the bubba'd guns are too far gone, and have to be fully sporterized to at least make them look decent.
Several online vendors offer good repro K98 slings too!

if the reciever has been drilled and tapped, i would personally just build a good hunting rifle out of it. then again ive been known to cut up a milsurp or 2- i havent bubba'd one yet!

yup - it doesn't have any value as a K98 anymore and would have no real resale value but it'd be my repro WW sniper
Btw I tried those Mojo sights on my vz24 today & I liked them - decent groups at 100 yd. Installation takes only 15 min or so and can easily go back to the original.

K98 saved
Put it in a RC stock. And yes, it is a J.P. Sauer action, everything matching with no import markings - poor Mauser :-( I might follow lefty o's suggestion about removing the scope and filling the holes but I'm not sure how to go about it or if I can handle it. Might just leave it this way. Anyway, makes me feel better.

Put screws in them and cut them off flush, put a lil cold blue on and they'll hardly be noticeable. If you want to reblue, the polishing wheel will really hide them from all but the closest scrutiny.

Thanks. Hmm, I might do that (cold blue of course, don't have the stuff or the know how for hot bluing). But it won't have the same value as a untouched one will it ? I might as well keep it as a shooter with the weaver scope ?

Nope, it's collector value is gone. No matter what you do now those screw holes will always show up under real close scrutiny. A gunsmith can polish and reblue and make them all but invisible but to someone looking for them they'll find them. Up to you to do whatever you feel is right for you. This is a fine action and would make an awsum sporter but it costs a lot to do it up right. (I know) So it's your call. No really wrong decision to make at this point.
Not in my mind anyway. there's those that will disagree with me tho. ..Right Dale?
