Beautiful clean wood and bright metal. Bore is perfect. The redhead liked it too. Everything screamed K98 except that the underside of the bolt handle was flattened instead of a notch relieved in the stock. Were any K98s like that, or does this mean it's a different model? I can't overestimate its condition, except that all visible parts matched (bolt, floorplate, receiver, stock, everything I could see). Only wierd thing was a slightly lighter colored handguard. Price tag was $180. Fair? You know what I'm thinking (if you've read my recent Mauser posts)... She said she could in fact get the hang of cleaning regularly. Course there's also Olympic Ammo. (I don't think she got the clue.) I may be going back there soon to have it tucked away.

Bent bolt handle? Flattened bolt knob? Sounds like an M48 Yugo.

BRG is there checkering on the flat part ? I think some K98s did have that. In fact, Empire Arms had one or two some time ago with the flattened bolt underside (manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch). That's not a bad price for a good K98 at all.

Handle was bent pretty far. No the underside wasn't checkered. Being an M48 would explain how this store had it at such a great price, because while not terribly priced, usually aren't the lowest game in town.

Does the handguard come back behind the rear sight? If so, it's either a VZ24 or an M48. The K98 had the shortest handguards, extending from in front of the sight up to the rearmost band only.

So a rifle that looks just like this would be a Yugo M48 and NOT a K98, correct? ![]() Is it this rifle that is a slightly shorter action than the original? And is the VZ-24 (or is it Yugoslav model 24 and 24/47?) the same or is it full length? The Yugos sure do like their thicker wood, as evident on the SKS and AK models from there, which are super.

That's a Yugo alright. Not sure about the question about the action. The vz24 & the m48 should be around the same length. I'm not sure if the Yugo 24/47 & vz-24 are the same guns action-wise but both have a straight bolt and the receiver markings are different.

I have the M48 and a couple of the VZ24's and just checked them. The action on the M48 is noticeably shorter than the 24's.

Then a Yugo M48 would be ideal for a 308 rebarreling project if I so wish later? As opposed to 30-06, which would require the longer action.

The VZ24 has a different sling mount system, flat buttplate, and the longer K98 size action - otherwise very much similar to the M48 in appearence. Either one is good for a .308 conversion - the length difference is minimal.
