| Super Moderator ![]() | Non-corrosive 8mm options
Of course we should all be able to clean our milsurps after using corrosive ammo and should be able to do it in wierd situations. But still, I'd like to have the option of non-corrosive ammo, say I'm shooting in a remote location or on a tight schedule and cleaning the guns isn't feasible. Wondering what options there are for shooting non-corrosive 8mm. Particularly new production Olympic ammo and reloading costs. What options are there? Thanx

J&G sales advertisment in the Shotgun news has Sellier and Bellot 8mm Mauser for 11.95 for a box of 20. It is listed under S&B specialty ammo and it says it is brass case, Non-corrosive, boxer primed and reloadable.

I try to follow the rule of Berdan primed is usually corrosive. If you always clean like its corrosive you should not have a problem. If your ammo is a problem then when your done shooting spray with plain unscented and non detergent ammonia. Send a bore brush with some cleaner down afterwards just for the sake of a lube job until you can really get to it. Anyone here ever use Eds Red bore cleaner on your 8mm and other mil surp guns.?? Great stuff. Ask me... for the price mil. surp. ammo. is a good way to go. |

Or you could go with the best, Norma Imported Ammo, although they are going to cost a pretty penny 36-40$ per box of twenty, but they are hot loaded at 196 grains and are non-corosive, and have reloadable brass cases. However unless you are going to hunt with them, like I will this summer, I would stick to some Sellier and Bellot, or Olympic to keep the cost down at the range.

It's not for everyone's liking but I reload my 8MM now. In addition to non-corrosive ammo I have highly accurate rounds than I would find if I grabbed them from the gun shop.

I'll weigh in for the Olympic 8mm. It's good, relatively cheap stuff. I don't believe it's loaded hotter than surplus, but rather it doesn't have a flash suppresant in the powder mix, because you get a pretty cool muzzle flash. About 9 or 10 inches worth.

Personally I don't mind corrosive ammo. I don't shoot it in my prided guns, but for high powered plinking, sure why not. Shoot a little Windex and a patch through, followed by a lightly oiled one and I'm good to go. But I do see your point.

Yet, at slightly just over 50 cents a round it's a little high for my thinking....even for S&B. (what I mean by that is I can remember when S&B ammo was dirt CHEAP....but now that they have a following and the ammo is pretty good so, consequently, their prices have risen). On the other hand, if you buy rather than reload, $10/ box of 20 is not as bad as paying $20 /box of 20 for Remington, WInchester, and the likes. At any rate...buy, shoot, repeat.

S&B 8x57 is good ammo. I fired a box of it about a year or two ago. Pretty good quality, consistent ammo for the price and the cases are boxer primed brass.

Yep, I had good performance with S&B some years back. Still got the empty brass saved, in case I get to reloading for it. My 8mm Mausers just aren't good enough shooters to go to the trouble yet, when surplus is cheap & plentiful.

I was looking in Cabelas mag. last night "Master spring 2005 edition II" and came across a Marine (as in water) Salt terminator. It is used for boats, motors, trailers and fishing gear. At the same time it leaves behind a protective sheen? to prevent future corrosion. What do you think? Good enough for an engine good enough for a firearm??? Anyone ever use a solvent like this before? It is on page 57 or if you look on there web site it is item #DF- 01-5928 I am thinking on buying the small spray bottle and trying it on some older not so functional guns that I have and don't care so much for. Like I said does anyone have any experience with this type of solvent. ?????? Input, input |

ammoman is selling "8mm MAUSER 170 Grain COMMERCIAL BRASS CASE BOXER PRIMED NON-CORROSIVE SOFT POINT" @ $85 for 200 rounds (shipping included). But the brand is "Igman", which I am not familiar with.
