Slide Sight Help

Can anyone tell me what the markings on the slide rear sight on a turkish mauser mean they go from 0 up through 20. I assume that it has something to do with the max range or elavation compensator for the maximum distance a shot could be accurately taken. My question is what exactly is the distances for each number are? (For Example Does notch #5 = 100 Yards?)

Any Information will be greatly appreciated.
