Mauser Help

Hi everyone,

I am going to build a rifle out of a Mauser action. I do not understand all the different model numbers that appear to be available. I know that I want a large thread 98 action.

Is there anywhere on the net. that would have a chart explaining the different Mfg.'s and model ?

Also, where is good places to buy guns or barreled actions. I do not want to buy off the internet.

Have you tried running a search engine, like ask.com? That's the best way to find stuff on the net. The best place I've found guns and gun parts for a good price is at gun shows. Some auctions sell guns too, but some people are there to only drive up prices. Pawn shops sometimes have cheap mausers also.

I have always wanted to build a custom Mauser rifle too. You would want to buy a 98K, which is a large ring mauser. They run around $150 for a good one. I would check Samco for a barreled action, sometime they have them in stock. It would be wise to buy Jerry Kuhnhausen's book on Mausers. It has all the information you would need and it contains a list of desirable actions. If you have an FFL or a CRFFL Brownells will offer a discount on tools and parts, such as: barrels, reamers, bolt handle fixtures, welding rod, and etc. You can use Swedish or Turkish mausers but they are less desirable and limited in strength. Strength limits the calibers you can chamber.
I must say by the time you get finished you can buy a new, more accurate Remington 700 for the money you have spent. I know the pride in building a custom rifle may be worth it, but the money goes fast.

93, 94, 95, and 96 are small ring mausers. A turk K.Kale is a large ring mauser with a small shank thread, same thread as a Swedish 96. Any 98 is a large ring, as are M48, M48A, 24/47, 98/22, 1909. A place that has parts, even if you just use as it as an index. http://www.sporterexpress.com/v2/ I have not done business there yet, but I have heard nothing but good reports. Brownells and Midway also carry a lot of parts.
gswagner.com is a very informative site to look at if you are considering a project such as this.

I sporterized a Turkish k.Kale Mauser last winter. I left it in 8mm. I reshaped the stock, added a maple tip. I also cut the barrel to 21 inches and recrowned it with a carriage bolt and valve grinding compound. I bent/welded the bolt handle. I put Leupold rings and bases on it, along with an Alpen 1.4-4.5x32 scope. I polished the metal and reblued it with a Birchwood Casey bluing kit. The only thing I haven't done yet is get a timney/bueller low swing safety for it, yet. I am proud of how this project came out. It shoots S&B 196grn softpoints 1.5MOA or less. That ammo is loaded to european specs (2600fps-30/06 class). American ammo is downloaded(2200fps-30-30 class). I buy S&B at Cabelas for $13 per 20. Tomorrow I will take a pic of the finished product if anyone is interested, just realised I haven't done so yet.

if it is for hunting i would say get a gew. 98, because the accuracy is higher

That was what i was looking for. I have made revolvers but never a long gun. I want to make a rifle in a different cal. and i am going to cheat by starting with an exsisting action.
