I just inherited

My dad just gave 3 large ring 98 mausers.
But they need to be rebarrelled.
The cartridge has to be less then 63 milimeters long.
I have decided that one of them is becoming a 257.
Need suggestions for the other two.
NO I Won't sale them.

I'd say go with something with similar length and the same base/rim size, but not as commonly chambered. Something like a 35 Whelen or a 6.5x55.

Educated horse:
It's an honnor to be given a rifle let alone 3 Mausers!
1. Find out about the mausers.
a. Did any relitives bring back these from WWII?
b. Check into the manufactures of the mausers. It's possible you have a reall gold mine or just run of mill 98.
2. Midway USA has Wilson Mauser Military stepped barrels in 30-06 and 308. Then you would need to reblue and intall sights. But, you still have a military look and will be able to hit what your shooting at.
3. Sporterizing? What kind of shooting do you do?
a. yearly deer hunting?
b. big game?
c. varmint hunting?
d. competetive shooting?
e. wildcat cartridge seceptiblities?
3a. These questions might help you to decide what caliber or which barrel contour you might need.
Alas:::::
How much money are you willing to INVEST?

I do not have the answers to these questions.
I can say I had to Great Uncles who fought in WWII. I do now that they brought some mausers home I don't now if these are the ones. My dad has three more 98 mausers that he is keeping for himself.
Both of my uncles have died with in the last five years and my dad got everything because they where never married and had no kids.

I do alot of hunting. Big game, deer and small game.
As far as competetive shooting I do that with my muzzleloader. Never thought about doing it with anything else.

But I will find out the answers to the questions you have asked and make my decsion.

I would like to thank everybody for there input.

Big game. 338 winmag for your elk. The 98 is a very strong action. If you do a magnum, the bolt face has to be opened up and get an extended trigger guard or have smith extend it.
Here is a "Mutt Turk 30-06" This is the least expensive project I'v done.
Free Truk receiver
Bolt $15
Stock $10 cut down mil stock
various parts from other projects
$45 Ebay Madsen 30-06 machinegun barrel
$60 to cut and install barrel
$50 for scope mounts
$30 Norinco scope (no laughing , too much)
Results, hole in a hole in a hole at 100. 1 1/2 group at 300 yards.

Why rebarrel them? Are they really that worn? Have you cleaned and shot them to see if they are truly beyond use?
Check the rifle's markings - any 'collector value' there, or just common milsurps?

So many questions to answer, before hacking them.
