Is yours full military stocked and does it still have the crest on the front top of the receiver. I have one and like most, the crest was ground off. They are 7.65 Argentine Mauser Caliber, ammo is still available, Ball is pretty Cheap. They are a good shooter and comparable to the 8mm Mauser, just Don't try to load and fire an 8mm round. They were manufactured for export by the Germans before WW1 and manufactured at 2 different facilities. They are quite similar to the M1890 Turkish Mauser.... Pics ????? Rich

This was the first smokeless caliber developed by the Mauser brothers themselves. I'm sure you've already researched it's history. Lots of info on the web and in reloading publications. Surplus non-corressive ammo is available and cheap. All I've seen was loaded at the San Fransico Arsenal in Argentine. For cheap, fast and easy handloads I've pulled the 185 military bullets and seated 180 gr Sierra soft points. Works great. That load should be about 5% lower pressure the the military loads, which run about 44,000 psi. And loads should be kept in that area for the Model '91. The model '09, which is based on the 1898 action will stand a little hotter loading. (Ken Winters covered this well in his "Pet Loads".) Regular factory loads are still available from Norma (Expensive!!!) but I think other manufactors have recently introduced new factory loads. Brass can be reformed from 30-06 cases. Here are three of my favorites in this caliber: Model '91 with miltary stock converted to mannlicher with Redfield receiver and Williams front sight. ![]() Model '91 Engineer Carbine. (My favorite to carry.) ![]() Model '09. | |
