Welcome group. I'm the new kid on the block....go easy! I have a Turk Mauser.Took the barrel off.Large ring O.D ,small ring I.D. Had hardness tested. All within Kuhnhausens specs.Do I have to spend a boatload of money on a custom fit barrel or can I take...say a Midway small ring of 6.5x55 and ream to 6.5 x57 ackley imp. 40 degree shoulder. I can lap bolts, bend bolts, fit triggers...and foxtot, fight, and throw dynamite. But nobody can give me a straight answer if I can take a short chambered 6.5 x 55 to 6.5x57 A.I. |

Hobknocker Yes, you have to spend a shipt load of money. That's exactly the project I want to do except for the Akley 40 degree shoulder. The Turks receiver threads may not be symetrical with reciever. Have bolt lugs lapped to insure good lock up. Have receiver squared off at front end. The Gunsmith should do this anyway to assure the barrel and receiver properly mate up. Then have smith "true" bolt face to receiver threads. Have smith take off a few .001 off the breech because the Swede is larger at base, .476 than the .473 of your new cartridge. Of course your having it drilled and tapped for scope and a bolt handle welded on. Followed by Timeny Trigger. Boyd's stock. Bed the action. Yeah, a shipload of money Then you have to fire form the brass. oh yeah, welcome aboard. the Full MeTal 2nd edit: Yeah why not re chamber it. Are you in Texas? Get two done for the price of one!

I think you may run into a problem because of the base diameter difference between the 6.5 X55 and the 6.5 X 57 Cartridge cases. The 6.5 X 55 has a larger base and rim. If it were the other way around it would work with a modified bolt face and extracter. The Ackley improved was a 6.5 X57 Mauser case with the shoulder blown out 15 degrees more to 40 degrees allowing more powder Capacity. Rich FMJ...Your Math is Flawed...The Bolt face is already TOO Large for the 6.5 X 57 AI Cartridge so it would require Tig Welding, Remachining and a Deeper Extractor for the smaller Rim Diameter.

MooseMan, you talking about the 6.5 x 57 rimmed? Hoberknocker is using a turk action. I am assuming the 6.5x57 is the same base, .473 , as the 7mm, 8mm, 308, etc. Therefore no modification is required to bolt extractor lugs except to true up bolt face to threading. Am I mistaken? I do not have that specific chambering in my reload books. from Chuck Hawks: For the reloader without a good supply of 6.5x57 cases, the easiest way to make some is to shorten .30-06 cases and run them through a 6.5x57 forming die, then trim to a final length of 2.232". This eliminates the need for fire forming, which is required if 7x57 cases are used. It is the slightly different shoulder set .046" farther forward on the 6.5x57 case that creates the need to fire form necked down 7x57 brass.

No, I'm talking about the 6.5 X 57 Mauser Cartridge used to make the Ackley Improved...IT has A Smaller base and Extracter Rim than the 6.5 X 55 that his rifle is currently chambered for. The base Diameter of the Chambering in the barrel is already larger than what the Ackley cartridge (X57)is !!! Rich
