| Russian capture K98 Yesterday my son and I were at a small gun show here. He bought a Russian capture K98, it's marked duv 42. The stock numbers match the receiver the bolt and floor plate do not. Over all it seems to be in nice shape and he wanted one as a shooter. It is missing the sling and cleaning rod. He just wanted me to ask for opinions about it. He paid $200 for the rifle. Thanks for any imput. |

| Sounds like a nice deal, but I have aquestion. Does it appear as if the Nazi markings were defaced? I've heard of the Russians often doing that to captured german weapons. |

| I had heard that too about the RC rifles, but all of the Nazi markings are intact. There is 1 on the barrel,2 on the receiver and if you look real close 2 on the stock. This is the first RC I have seen up close. Told him if he didnt buy it I was going to. |

| Russian capture K98's are excellent plinking guns and usually shoot very well with little adjustment. But one of major problems with those is usually there are Import marks which in most cases lowers the value of the rifle significantly. Other than that though the are excellent rifle and have a great history. P.S. tell your son he should pick up a cleaning rod from Classic Arms those are extremely hard to find and add value to your rifle. |

| Will definitely let him know as he wanted to find a cleaning rod and sling. Any good places around for a sling? I want to get a RC 98k in the future as well, to me they have a heck of history to them plus like you said an excellent plinker. I still have 2 98k's that are Vet pickups that i bought back in the early 70's. Yep, here we go with a long winded story. Bought the first one from a guy that his dad had given to him. He tells me that his dad had brought back 2, gave one to his brother and 1 to him. Guy hits me with a $30 price tag for it, i pay him and ask if he thinks his brother might want to sell his? I get the number for his brother give him a call but he says no not for sale. A few months go by and i call his brother again, this time he says yes, however the price for his was a whopping $35.I still have both of them, they are not super mint just great unaltered examples of the 98k. Both have all matching numbers also have the cleaning rods and leather slings. One is marked ce 43 the other is packed away and i don't remember it's date. Hope you all don't mind i just wanted to share that. |

| Thanks for that story. You have two great collector pieces. Its not everyday you find a K98 bringback, and if you do they will be very high priced. You lucked out you got two. |

| a friend bought A k98 at a gun show, it looks just like the ones being offered on AIM surplus. I checked the barrel and it appeared to have alot of pitting but the grooves were very visible all the way up the barrrel, is this a problem other than what I assume will be poor accuracy?? ![]()

| spiritual counselor ![]() ![]() | as long as its got lotsa grooves it should still shoot. my yugo mauser had a ton of rust /goop/sewage in it and it shoots well.

| You said your sons RC has a matching stock, I presume that means 1/2" numbers stamped on the left side of the stock. If so that is russian forced match as the original nrs are on the toe of the stock and/or in the bbl channel under the rear sight. The RCs are a total mixmaster of parts and nrs, but almost all are excllent shooters - even if they have ragged looking bores. No, match rifles they ain't, But they are good hunting rifles. I have several. I like them. Sarge |
