German Mauser

I have a 8mm mauser with the letters byf and 43 on top of the barrel at the rear of the receiver. It has the spread wings of the eagle above the german cross x. It has a short stock, the kind on most rifles today. All serial No are the same. Adjustable rear sites that slide, very clear bore and rifling. Is it worth much.

Does it have all four of the screws holding the trigger guard in place? Does it have the cleaning rod? Is there any sign of the Nazi marks being defaced? If it is all-original I'd say you have a "G.I. brought-back" rifle and not a "Russion capture", in which cse it would be worth $300-$800. If it is a Russion capture then it is probably worth $100-$220 (at least, you can find them in pawn shops and at gun shows for this price).

What do you mean short stock - like a normnal "sporter" stock that most hunting rifles have these days? If so it is not "all-original" and numbers matching and the value generaly drops by about 25%-50%.

Just my opinion on the subject. I've bought several recently - mostly already altered - and i plan to re-barrel, re-chamber, etc. It is a work in progress but will turn out great!

If it has a sporter stock it has no value as a collectible. I can buy "sporterized" 98s in nice shape for $150 in my neck of the woods. They make pretty nice hunting rifles unless they have been butchered, as so many of them have.

The markings are typical of a Kar98k. Too bad about the stock being cut down, but original full stocks and hardware are available, if you want to return it too it's wartime trim.

Yes, But an original stock, handguard & bbl bands will cost $200 +/-. It will then be a mismatch for ever, which greatly reduces it's value.
If you have no interest in collecting -or having a correct military rifle - keep it as it is and shoot it.

A friend is offering to sell me a "Mitchell's Mausers" 98 premium collector grade. What's your opinion(s) of these guns. Are they a reasonable value or are there better guns available for the money?
