K98 markings

I just bought a K98. This is my first Mauser. The serial number on the bolt and the safety look like they were written with an etcher. They match the number on the receiver. Is this normal?

it is not uncommon however this means that the bolt does not match the receiver and it is recomended to have the headspace checked by a gunsmith befor firering, welcome to G&G there are a lot of knowledgable people here, also we really like pics.

What happened after the war was that they would remove the bolts from the rifles and store them separately to keep (I guess) the germans from picking one up and using it against them.

Would a russian capture rifle be more valued if they hadn't forced match the bolt? I mean why do it as there would be no value in doing it and it is pretty easy to spot as being such.

i believe a rifle with its original bolt is worth more than one with a forced matched bolt.

OZ, the bolt is electropenceled with a number that matches the receiver.

Thanks for all the info. Are there other markings that tell you it is a Russian capture?

An "X" on the receiver or barrel. Blued butt plates. Red varnish on the stock.
