quick question

back in the states I purchased a k98 a while back from 1940 that came with a WW1 combat engineers bayonet(very cool i hate to be on the business end of that back in the russian front days) anyway its in superb condition and the bore is strong and bright. with a fire-arm like would anyone keep on using or set it aside as collectors piece? Not to mention this is the oldest weapon I have out of my collection, for now. but I'm only 20 and got a long way to go as far as collecting military weapons.

If it were me, I'd clean it and the bayonet, wipe them down with a protectant cloth, and then regard them as collector pieces. Rifles from that early in the war in the condition you describe aren't very common, in my experience. I'd get another 98K to shoot. You can find some nice 98Ks at Classic Arms for between $250 and $300. Here is the link:

I guess I don't have a collector's mentality. While I understand the sentiment, I personally don't own wall hangers. I expect every gun I own to shoot; that's what they were designed and built for.

That doesn't mean I abuse them, of course. And there are a couple I'm very, very careful with. But I'd no more keep a gun and not shoot it than I'd own a car and not drive it.

Look at it this way, it was built to withstand extremely harsh wartime conditions. The shooting you're likely to do with it will probably seem like a vacation to an old war veteran like that. Shoot it, clean it, enjoy it...

I won't own one and not shoot it, either.

Well, first off I Do NOT agree with the "If I own it, I gotta shoot is" group!
I would about bet than none of you own a truly valuable collectable firearm that you shoot. For example my WW 2 Walther P.38 30 Luger single action in mint condition - value 10K+. IF you do then you're just making mine more valuable, altho I cringe at the thought!
And then there is the fact that if you have very many guns it's pretty hard to shoot all of them very often.
Again for example my 49 K98k rifles. If I went shooting every week and took one of them along with all the other stuff I take, it would take me a year to have shot them all. Since I only go about every couple of months it would take me 10 years, unless I went out 1 time just to shoot 20+ 98ks.
When you are not a Serious military collector and only have a dozen or 15 guns, many of which are civilian, then shooting everything is pretty easy. Or if your "collection" consists of shooter grade weapons as apposed to truly "Collector" grade.

So which gun in your collection was designed to NOT be shot? As far as I know, ALL mil-surps were made to be shot, most at enemy combatants. This makes "general" shooting ie: plinking, the easiest action these guns have ever seen. I may be wrong, but I can't tell any difference in a gun shot by me and a gun shot by a Nazi officer. As far as I'm concerned, a gun unshot is ornamental.

Thumbs down

Yep go ahead and shoot all of your collector grade guns! I'm sure that any you have and shoot are not likely to break, just because they are 50 - 100 yrs old and besides, if they did you could always buy any old "correkt part" and replace the broken one. The fact that the broken one had a ser nr or specific proofs on it and your replacement did not would undoubtedly not effect the value by more than 50% so why worry - Right?
I've had the broken ser nr'd part problem. It only made the G43 worth about 1/3 less $. That's as in $500 worth maby $350+ afterwards. Now days that same matching rifle would be worth around $3k, but as a mismatch is worth closer to $1800.
Yep, I agree if you have a collector grade firearm, by all means take it out and shoot it regularily instead of hanging it on the wall. The more you break the more my guns increase in value. Kinda like taking your 1970 Corvette out to the demolition derby!
I've got about 150 "Ornaments" and about 50 shooters. I have yet to suffer any mental/physical hardships by not shooting any of the 150!
