troy it's hard to believe their are still Mausers available today. You should consider at least one to add to your firearm collect.
What gets me is, that theres some very good to excellent condition 8 mm Mauser in
abundance on the market.
Go to Classic Arms and see the ones there selling and I bet Shootgun News is full of them.

I have a small ring 98 that has the third lug. It's a K98a. Kind of unusual. Look it up.

It's not hard to do a quick head space check.
go to the auto parts store and spend two bucks
on a set of thickness guages. The take scissors
and cut round disk from the .008 guage just
a little smaller than the case head on a cartridge.

glue that on the end of the cartridge over
the primer.

Then ( for best results ) take the firing pin
out of the bolt and also remove the extractor.
The bolt should close just from the gravity
on the bolt handle and it should bump up
against the cartridge and not close all the
way ( just easy finger pressure here ).
If you feel it bump a little bit, the head space
is OK and safe. Be sure to use modern commercial
ammo of good standards. I use Hornady Ammo
for measurements.

Thumbs down

NOT a good idea to take the extractor off and then reinsert the bolt!!!!! You will then have the bolt locked in the receiver!!! It can be gotten out, but is a real pain in the ass to do so!
