newbie Q?

I presently collect enfields, but am interested in other WW2 weapons of the european theaters, I like the russian mosin nangant's and mauser's. The pawn shop where I live has a Yugo 8 MM for $139.00 Is this 8mm a good place to start? I like to shoot them also, not just collect.

Mausers are great guns and that's not a bad price if it's in good shape. Be sure to pull the bolt and look at the barrel as these were all shot with corrosive ammo and the bore may be bad if it wasn't cleaned properly. The 8x57 round is plenty stout and will have a bit more thump to it than most Enfields. If the gun is in good shape, I'd say go for it. FWIW, almost all commercial ammo is loaded extremely light because the early guns had .318 (aka J)bores and the later guns have the .323 (JS) bores. U.S. ammo makers were concerned about the .323 ammo finding its' way into a .318 bore and causing a KB, so they purposely load it down to around .30-.30 Win. specs. Hornady makes some that is closer to original as does S&B, Wolf Gold, etc.
