| K98 with Pics As far as it being a Russian capture, I have no clue. You guys would have to say. Yea, #s matching the guy said would be $500-600. But he didn't specify on anything specific. I walked in and saw it and it was still there when I went to the ATM, and fortunately it was still there when I got back, so I got it. And picked up a tin of 7.62x54R while I was there. But, here are the pics. You guys can tell me all about it now. I know its Mauser manufactured. And is the 42 the date? There are some eagle over swastika stamps on it. As for that, the bolt stamp on the handle matches the receiver, but the black housing has a different number stamped on it. I'll have to dissect it later. It was in great shape when I picked it up. The old man I bought it from said his old eyes could see to shoot 2 or 2.5 inch group I think he said at 100, maybe he said 75. So I will see if I can improve on that. Here are the pics. Should be able to see the #s on it well. I'd like to find a bayo for it. Not that I'd probly need it for anything, but it would be cool to have one. And what does the gg mean in the serial number? There are two things I don't like about it already.....The mag has to be depressed to close the bolt on empty, and the other is the gun can't talk. If it could, I'm sure there would be days and days of history it would tell me. Anyways, any info is appreciated. Out the door for $230. And I tried to get some good pics of the bore. It can be partially seen in the two pics I have up. But that was another reason I thought I had better buy it. It looked sooo good. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| Yes, it's Russian Capture. The x on the reciever indicates that. My 98K Mauser is a RC as well. Yours is a 1942 Obendorf Mauser. You should try to get a cleaning rod and front sight hood for it. The stamps are proof marks / inspectors marks. Nice rifle! Last edited by jpwilly; 03-29-2008 at 11:34 PM. |

| Hey thanks man. Wheres a good place to find those things you mentioned? Were those taken off or was that original spec. for this gun? I'm still a newbie to Mausers. All I know about them is they are good guns, especially the ones the Germans made. If I disassemble fully and remove the barrel assembly from the stock, will there be more stamps on the barrel that will tell me what they did exactly to it during an arsenal rework? Anyways, thanks for the info! |

| Senior Member | Did you pay 230 for it or 5-600$ for it? I have not seen a russian Capture K98 that was ALL-MATHCING. What usually happened when the Germans surrendered they would pile rifles in one pile and bolts in another. Then later they put the bolts back without noting which bolt went with which rifle. They then would electro pencil the last four serial digits into the bolt. This would look like hand writing. If this is what you have then it is not all matching and not worth 500$, it is closer to the 230$ price you listed. If it is all matching then it was a great buy at 230$. Its hard to tell by looking at the pics you have. However most of the Russian captures I have seen had a coated bolt with the numbered penciled in. Yours might be an original all matching K98. Hard to tell. Look at the bolt to see if you see 7112 stamped into the bolt. BTW IT DOES NOT SHOOT 7.62 x 54!!!! IT SHOOTS 8MM!!!!

I did some shooting with it today. It shoots high. Does anyone else have any problems with their Mauser K98 shooting high? My Turk Mauser pretty much shot where I pointed it. The milsurp Turk ammo tho, is dated 1944. It shot really well, no "click......bangs" out of it. Looks like it rolled off the assy. line last night. I only wish it was a steal of a deal. But now I got the real German Mauser, and I am very satisfied with my purchase. And its good to hear he didn't rob me either on the deal. I don't know if he didn't want to let it go, but he didn't want to budge too much on the price. I wouldn't want to let that gun go either. Will have to do some fine tuning to get her dialed. Any tricks/hints etc....from you knowledge banks out there, I'm ready to learn more! Thanks As an add on to the reply I just posted, for kicks and giggles, I slid a 7.62x54R into the chamber on that 8mm Mauser to see if it would fit, and it did. But I didn't close the bolt on it. I didn't want to try it, but I don't know if it would seat properly anyways with that large rim on the bottom. But at any rate, I was surprised it dropped right in. Could be dangerous for someone that didn't know the difference. I also shot my M44 today. Didn't shoot as well as I have shot it before. But, I suppose it could be the ammo, because I just bought a tin of Albanian 7.62x54R. At least it was on the target, so I guess I can't complain too much. | I took my new one out to the range yesterday, and it shot high as well. I only shot five rounds through it because I ran out of time, but then I saw how high the shots were and thought it would have been smart to wait and make adjustments anyway. As to price, you did a very nice job. I paid more for mine. Not to say I am not happy with it... I love it. See Pic. Gun and Game Forums - acarpenter's Album: My collection...so far. - Picture P.S. That light colored square on the butt is what I would assume the result of grinding off some German stuff, so I figure it will kinda give it some character if I leave it... |

| Carpenter where did you get that sling and cleaning rod? Did that come with it? I asked the guy I bought it from how the sling attaches, because it just looks odd with that slit in the stock like that. Do you have a pic from the other side to see how the sling goes in? If not no big deal. I was just curious. And if anyone knows where I can find a cleaning rod I'd be happy to know. Thanks! |

| Mine came with the cleaning rod from ClassicArms, but they sell a reproduction that is supposed to be perfect. They also have the capture screws, a NEAT little original cleaning kit, and A sharp reproduction sling. I actually got my sling on Ebay from this place called Landser Outfitters. It is also a perfect reproduction. ClassicArms- Firearms Landser Outfitters- eBay Store - Landser Outfitters: WWII, German, Militaria **I will post a couple pics to help you get yours on later today, as I had the same problem. Haha. Its pretty easy once you see the sling. |

| Ok, well I took a look at the classic arms site, and they sell everything there pretty much. But, the question is, how do I know how long my cleaning rod ought to be? I read somewhere, and I am not sure if it was in the Mauser category, that the buddy system was used for cleaning the guns, and screwing into someone elses rod. I guess it makes sense if they are giving out 10 and 12 inch rods to clean a 2 foot barrel. So my question is how do I know what one is the right one for my K98 that was made in 1942? I stuck my cleaning rod I use to clean all my guns down the hole, and it stopped. The cleaning rod is 11.5 inches long. So I know where a 12 inch one would stand. Or does it matter. I don't think I'll even be using that cleaning rod to clean it unless I'm somewhere where everyone else has a K98 to share their rods. But, I did notice a kind of nakedness with that rod missing. Anyways if someone knows how long the rod ought to be, let me know. |

| Not sure as to the length, I tried to unscrew mine but it was kinda tight so I decided it was too much trouble because I couldn't do it by hand. Mine is definately just for looks as well. You should get one if you find out the correct length. They are nice to do business with. My gun was here four days after I ordered it. Here are some pics that hopefully help ya out in installing a sling. All you have to do is remove the buckle from one end. Loop the sling through the ring on the end of the stock and feed the leather end through metal keeper. Then take the one end that is left and feed through the stock and reattach the buckle. |

| Anytime. And thanks, I am really loving it. I have to take mine to the range again when I have more time and make sure I don't have an ejector problem. Keeping my fingers crossed. Have fun with your Mauser!! |

Heheh, yes I have an M44 and a 91/30. Thanks for the concern tho. The price wasn't too bad, and probly would have been about the same after shipping from wherever as well. So I figured what the heck. I was out of 7.62x54R for my Mosins anyways. Thanks. | |
