| In 1969, I came across a warehouse sale of old mausers at $3 each....Yes $3 each! They were in pretty rugged shape but I bought all they had left. 117. I have purchaced them mostly for the actions and now have a large # of converted mausers. I now own custom mausers 06 collection starting from 22/06 to the 35 wheelen with everything in between. Those that are not in 06 case are: 45/70 (siam mauser) 257AI. 6.5-308 22-250 6mmPPC Restored 7.65 argintine Restored 7mm chilian Restored 8mm 98k |

| 3 Swedish M96 1 Persian 3 Yugo 48 1 Yugo 24/47 ![]() RM, I'd first wash the stock with Murphy's wood soap, 1/2 cup to a gallon of water and use cheese cloth and see what that did for it. It looks like it has a lot of grime from hands and powder from over and through the years. It would only take a half hour to an hour maybe if that to do. You might find it's all you'll need or want to do then? Can't hurt anyhow. What he said. I washed mine with dishwashing liquid and a green scouring pad. After all the grease and grime came off I had a beautiful walnut stock so all I had to do was put on a couple coats of BLO. It still looks like aged wood should. I have 3 absolutely pristine M48s but the 24/47 is my favorite of the group. Last edited by BOHICA1962; 05-15-2008 at 07:59 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

| Uhhmm, when I run out of fingers my counting suffers. The Persian was listed twice. But I'm about to be in compliance with the Baker's dozen rule because an M96 is on the way. |

| I wondered what this photo had to do with Mausers??? Interesting, I've never seen the bottom pistol gripped sten before. I used to love Firing the Bren, (well the 7.62 L4A4 version) (hated carrying it!); I actually came in runner-up (2nd) one year in one of the British army Skill at Arms competitions, LMG gun pairs, 600 yard run down. |

| Time to chime in, but I feel like a pauper. I only have 3: M 96 Swede Carl Gustafs 1915 6.5X55 K 98 K 1942 with 3 swastika/eagles 8MM VZ 24 Brno Persian 8MM -does anybody know how to date these Brnos? Mine has a serial number that starts with the letter A, but no date. |

| SGRAVESOK, From your description I'm not sure what you have, VZ24 BRNO Persian 8mm? Is it a carbine or a long rifle? To my knowledge the VZ24 is a carbine. There are Persian carbines, not many, but the markings should all be in Farsi. Same with a 98/29 long rifle, also made at BRNO for Persia. There are also 98/22 long rifles marked BRNO on the receiver, serial numbers starting with a letter, no dates on the receivers and usually Turkish numbers on the sight ladder. Production of those was in 1922-23 and another batch if I remember right 1926-27. |

| Cheapblaster, Thanks for the reply. I am at work so can't get to it, but here goes-it is a long rifle, serial number begins with'A", it has Turkish or Persian numbers on the sight, and it is marked BRNO on the receiver. I bought it 2 or 3 years ago and paid $100 total (shipping, trasnfer fee, tax). It had enough cosmoline to preserve at least a case of rifles. After refinishing the stock and reblueing the metal, it looks like a million dollars and really shoots well. I recently started handloading for it and got a 3/4" one hole group at 25 yds with one load. Will do some more experimenting and check it at 100 yds in the next few weeks. |

| I just got my first and second Mausers in the last couple of days; a Yugo and a K98. The Yugo had the expected cosmoline while the K98 was full of something I can only describe as unholy muck. |

| Congrats on the new irons. These Yugos are notorious for being covered in cosmo. Mine is still covered.

I spent about 8 hours of intensive cleaning to rid my Yugo of cosmoline. Now she looks very nice and will look better when I replace the cleaning rod and sight hood (both are bent). The German was a most unpleasant experience to clean. Very little cosmoline left of the rifle when I got it; but it looks like the previous owner hadn't cleaned the rifle for some time. But she's clean now but still needs a few replacement parts (mag floor plate, cleaning rod, and I'd like to find an intact (and cheap) surplus replacement stock). | |

| So far, a 1940 Sauer K-98, a 24/47 with bent bolt handle, and a BRNO K-98 is on it's way from Samco right now. Dow bathroom cleaner has done a good job getting grime off of stocks for me and Klean Strip gets rid of that Russian Shellac. A follow up with linseed oil or beeswax makes it look right.
