Unhappy worn barrel.....

Hi all
1912 Chilean Mauser (rebored to 7.62). After extensive cleaning of the bore, I have found that the rifling is quite worn and shallow. The previous owner(s) obviously didn't give a s*** for this rifle.
I have yet to shoot it...how badly will this wear affect the accuracy, and could I improve upon it by handloading 200 gn. bullets in the hope that the heavier load will help to stabilize the round in flight? Is there any other way,( besides reboring to a larger caliber, which I don't really want to do...) to "sharpen" the rifling a bit?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

You might be surprised at how well some of these old warhorses will shoot with worn\pitted rifling. If it's really innacurate, you may want to rebarrel it. Russ @ Springfield Sporters may have a good barrel for it.

The rifling may be "leaded" and need a thourough cleaning. Some gunshops may carry a kit that electricly cleans the barrel you might try them first. I have my own that I use to get out the lead and copper. You would be amazed at the crud that comes out of an old barrel this way.

hey, anyone know what the original bore size and what ammo an M71-84 uses? Kinda new to mausers, at least the specs of em. I just know the M71-84 was the first bolt-action repeating rifle Mauser produced.
