Is this a HOLE drilled into the chamber?

These are pictures of my recently purchased 7mm Mauser. The pictures were posted by the Seller on Gunbroker, and the rifle is still waiting for my money order to reach the Seller.

The top picture shows what MAY be a hole into the chamber: I hope it is not, but I only caught it yesterday.

Would some of you Mauser experts set my mind at ease about this “hole”, and identify a likely description of this rifle so I can order a stock for it? I THINK it is a Model 93 small-ring Mauser in 7mm.

The hole is the case/primer rupture safety hole.

What wunhunglo said. In a very unhandy place for a southpaw shooter.

It should be added that the hole in the side is not original to the gun. I hope your not paying more than a $100-$125 for this gun.

In other words, MouserMan, this hole may render this gun inoperable, or at least unsafe to operate, right?

It could be.... and considering that its a "small ring" Mauser I wouldnt trust it/ fire it. Not at least until it was checked out by a good gunsmith, preferably one accustomed to working on Mausers.

And I really dont mean to piss on your parade, but after looking at those photos again...I personally wouldnt pay more than $50-$75 for that gun. Its not in the best shape, even for a "bubba" sporter. :P

This is the "gas relief port" on a different Spanish Mauser. It looks like this one has actually done its job (see burn mark at port). A friend, a really good gunsmith, sent me this image from a current Gunbroker auction.
