| Mauser question
Ok, so my older brother has this turkish mauser at the house, and he's gonna let me use it for hunting this year. I know its a 8mm but im not sure if its .323 or .318 cal. He had spray painted it camo so im not sure if i missed anything that would have told me about this. Also, i really like this gun and im wondering if its worth investing in, and maybe upgrading, like a new stock(i seen one that ATI has that looks decent and has good reviews), but im just a teenager who doesnt have alot of money who really loves guns. I would appreciate any help, or input i could get. Last edited by Hawkeye29; 07-17-2008 at 09:28 PM. Reason: spelling |

It depends what you want to do. You can spend quite alot on these old rifles . Especially if you pay to have all the work done. A good stock like the ati is a good start. I've got a Turk 38 that I sporterized mostly by myself and I've only got $155.00 in it. It shoots really good. If you want to take it on , go for it.

Thanks, roverboy, did you also get a new barrel for yours? also will a k98 barrel fit on my m38 turk?(i see all these barrels for sale, but they all say k98, so im not sure) And my dad has been building flintlocks since he was my age so he knows the "ropes" rifles. And also what would you recommend me to do(with it), but i guess that all has to do with my individual rifle. Last edited by Hawkeye29; 07-18-2008 at 12:47 PM. |

M38 was a 'standard' that many different older Turkish Mausers have been rearsenalled to and the later ones were originally built to - barrels can vary a lot! The Turks USED their Mausers, old and new! They had a lot of wars over there. Some are 'small ring' type, some are 'large ring' type - a good gunsmith may be able to tell which. Basically, you will need to have the barrel removed from the action, see which type it is, THEN order the new barrel to fit. It can get expensive to customise an old Mauser, doing it 'right'! Check out these web sites for Turk Mauser info..... http://www.turkmauser.com/ Turk Mauser - Large Ring/Small Ring http://www272.pair.com/stevewag/turk/turkmain.html

Yeah, thanks big dog, my dad shot down the idea tho. he said since it shoots good now just leave it. He told me to just save up and buy a savage, or rem 700, b/c i would end up with more bang for the buck in the long run. I really do like that old gun tho. |

Hawkeye 29, I didnt rebarrel . The original barrel is in good shape. I cut in down to 23'' and recrowned. I reworked the stock, bedded the action, freefloated the barrel, did some trigger work, and added a timney safety. I also welded on a new bolt handle. You asked about k98 barrels. Heres where it gets weird. Turk 38's most the time have small ring barrels. K98 barrels are large ring. You can use any barrel off of a 91,93,94,95,96. These are all small ring. This can be confusing, since a turk 38 is basicly a 98 action. Check out Steve Wagner's web site . He has about anything you want to know about a turk. Good Shootin David |

O Gwad! I hope you get the joke! That rifle was at a pawn shop for more than a year. It was a complete gooo mess. Picked it up and the glue from the tape stuck to ya. Rifle had a good crown. Bought it for $55. Shoots very good. Restocked it in another turk mil stock.

Gee, dont invest if its a Turk. Just shoot it they way it is. Dont invest much in the Turk. When your ready and you have money try and find you a good German, CZ, or Swedish Mauser to upgrade.

I wouldn't "invest" in the Turkish mauser.........I might buy one for a shooter for under $100 if it's in good condition. You'll pay more but get much more buying a Swedish Mauser or a Swiss K31. I would never go hunting with any rifle until I'd fired it enough to know I could make a clean kill and not have to chase a wounded animal to finish it..........or worse and not find it. i have the ati scope mount scout stock if interested, used it on a k-kale series turk 8 mm. you would need to get a bent bolt conversion, or just find a bent bolt at the gunshow, on line etc. how does covering shipping work? just sitting there gettin dusty and cant seem to toss it out.
