This is a tough comparison, I think the Mauser 98 in its various forms is the ultimate design in bolt action rifles of the 20th century. It had everything that a safe, accurate, and durable rifle needed in an infantry rifle. Yet the Lee-Enfield in its No.1MkIII and the No.4Mk1/II, etc. display some of the most outstanding "handling" characteristics in any infantry rifle. The L-E had a 10 shot magazine that was double the European standard of the day. The rifle could be fired and the bolt opened to extract the spent round and then closed with out removing the rifle from your shoulder or sighting...Try that with any other Allied BA rifle or Axis BA rifle...I have several L-E rifles because they are fun to shoot and they make good sporters if so inclined.

I voted for the enfield. I guess that is because I own one and am very impressed. The closest thing to a 98K I have is an 03A3. Great rifle but I can cycle an Enfield faster and sight it faster.

I have both and I favor the Enfield.

The 10 round magazine is one big plus for the Enfield.

Well, soon a fellow G&G member will own both my Mauser and My Enfield but in parting with them I will say that they were both great guns. The Enfield is flawless in its action and the Mauser is a Fine long gun.

I say Enfield..
and then Mauser..

I've got two Model 4's and one K98. I have to agree with the folks favoring the Enfield. The bolt operates much more smoothly and quickly. Then throw in twice the magazine capacity and I think there's little doubt. The Mauser might have the advantage at longer ranges, I've never fired either beyond 100 yards.

My Enfield shoots better than my Mauser does at this point in time anyways. But it could just be the old Turk Mauser 8mm I have. I did buy some other 8mm Mauser ammo, and haven't shot that on paper yet. I should probly do that and see if it shoots any better.

both have pros n cons

I have 2 M96 mausers (customised and standard ex-mil)and 2 SMLE no3s a full wood ex-mil and a sporterised, and have played with plenty 98k rifles, their both tough rifles, but I would say the mausers are a stronger action, they just look it,theres more metal there,so for reloading and handling pressure for hunting or target,Id go the mauser, however, the 10 round detachable magasine on the .303 makes it the superior battle rifle(Of its time of coarse)capeable of a higher rate of fire, and still has plenty knockdown, has been used on every animal in australia,so depends what you want to do with it,I wouldnt like to be hit with either.
Someone build a 98k with a 10 shot detachable mag!!
