Mauser trigger ?

The other night I was over at a buddy's house and saw the barrel of some type of rifle sticking out from behind some stuff. I inquired about it, and he pulled out a barrelled 98K action (I believe that's what it is), that had been drilled and tapped and had scope rings on it. It was an old project gun, he said, that he hadn't done anything with. At least not anything good. He tried to remove the blueing with a wire brush, missing some of the action screws, things like that. I asked him what he wants for it, and he gave it to me! Cool, I thought. The barrel still has good rifling, minimal rust on the outside and crown, and the action is smooth and fairly tight. It's marked R. Famage 1952, so it's one of the rifles sent over to Columbia or Argentina (I forget which) for their military. My question is this: I have seen several types of Mauser triggers, some of which come with a side mounted safety. Will those types of triggers work on the 98?

timney makes triggers for just about every mauser. check brownells or midway, they'll list what each trigger fits.

Bold makes a great trigger too. Brownells and Midway should have them. I've got one on my 1916 Spanish Mauser. They mak'em for the 98 too.

I've found the trigger to fit, that's not the problem. I just don't want to buy a trigger with the side mounted safety only to find out it won't work with, or causes issues with the original safety on the bolt.

generally when you mount a trigger with a side mounted safety, you either replace the original bolt shroud, or just remove the safety from the original bolt shroud. aftermarket bolt shrouds with no safety provision start at about $35, and go up from there.

Ok, thanks. I'm pretty excited about this. I'm not tearing up a "good" rifle, so I get to play around and experiment. I'm hoping to make a knockaround rifle that's a decent shooter, try some different things and maybe learn a little in the process.

One other question while I have your ears, (actually there will probably be more than one 'cause this is my first time doing something like this). Can you completely remove the front and rear sights on this rifle, or is it more trouble than its worth? Also, I'll post some pics when I get home tonight to make sure that I have identified the rifle correctly.

Ok, here are the pictures I promised. Let me know if I made a mistake on IDing the rifle or if there is anything else you need to see.

He even found a camo taped stock that I went and picked up tonight.

sights are soldered on (rear sight also has a set screw) . depends on what you want as to whether its worth the hassle to remove them.

I may rebarrel it in the future (gotta see how it shoots first), so I'll probably just leave them on. I'm interested in seeing whats under that tape.

I'd take the tape off too. It may leave a sticky glue on the surface. Hot water, soap, and a scrub brush should help you. It may even be clean underneath.

I got the tape off. The adhesive is a whole different story. It is on there good! I tried fingernail polish remover, but it didn't work very well. I'll try the hot water and soap tonight. I need to put some pictures up for you guys with the tape off. The stock has a piece of brass running sideways through it. (I know that's a great description) Let me know what you guys think when I get the pics up.

Before you shoot it check your headspace. Plus one on the Bold trigger.

Any ideas on the brass insert in the stock? What are the screws (?) running through it?

That's the recoil lug in the photo. The piece with the small holes is the nut. Put a small punch in one of the holes and they usually come off with hand pressure. . I have a Huber Concepts trigger in my K98 and it's well worth the $69 it costs. It's a real "drop in". Your trigger is very simple and easily removed and reinstalled. Surplus rifle web. site has a very good tutorial on disassembly and reassembly including the bolt.

Thanks, I try really hard to research things and not ask "stupid" questions on this site, but sometimes I can't help myself. I finally removed all of the adhesive from the stock. That was a chore! What finally ended working the best was a combination of alcohol, nail polish remover, and elbow grease (lot's of this). Needless to say the stock needs to be refinished now. I've decided to leave the sights on the rifle for now until I shoot it. I guess now I need to find some glass to put on it as I can't see the sights because of the scope mounts.
