| Thor's Hammer ![]() | Mauser Find
I picked up a Mauser for Sale today. It is 7x57, and 37" oal. It appears to be missing the upper handguard, as the barrel band does not seem to fit. The buttplate matches the stock exactly, so I do not think it is cut down. The picsa are not of the actual rifle, but are the closest in features !! There are no symbols, crests or the like. Just the serial number on the left of the receiver and on a bent bolt. Although the bent bolt is matching, can it be original ?? The bore is dark but with strong grooves The front sight has the beginning of rust and there is rust on the upper buttplate screw. Comes with 40 rds of factory 7x57, dies, and a non-era sling. I have first right of refusal. The seller said it is a M93. I don't see that in the images I have been able to pull up. Maybe an Argy ?? Serial number is 3805

Steve that Mauser kinda looks like my 1909 Argintine Carbine. But the cabines were chambered for the 7.65mm cartridge. The picture of the Mauser look great...A.H |

There is some stamping in the second picture. On the left side of the receiver ring there is stamped Modelo ? What is stamped there?

Might be a Spanish. Sounds like that from the word Modelo. The Spanish Model 43 was basicly a 98. It was called Modelo 43. Yours is probably a 93.

Looking in Robert Ball's book "Mauser Military Rifles of the World", you have a nice unbubba'd Spanish M95 Carbine. OAL and caliber are proper, as is the upper handguard - NOT cut down! The rear sling bar denotes it was made after 1896. Nice find! If the price is good, grab it! The M93 Carbine has a totally different stock fore end and front sight.

OK, so I went to Springfield Sporters and they list several Handguards. My rifle is 37" OAL, and is 7x57. It appears the hanguard should be about 16" long. SS's lists hanguards for Spanish Rifle, Spanish Short Rifle, Rifle 95, Carbine 95, and Turkish Rifle. My guess is it is a Carbine 95 ??

The best I can deduce is that it is a Spanish Mauser 1895 Cavalry Carbine. Why the guy that I bought it from kept calling it a M93 is it's actually built on a 93 receiver, but was not produced until 1895. What was throwing me was the lack of a saddle ring. Taking a magnifying glass to it showed a near invisible splice to fill where the ring would go. The front screw that holds on the nose cap/sight "ears" is frozen. So I cant get the stock off until I can free it up. The final ID came from this article: Firearm Technical Trivia, December 1999

Finally got the stock off, so I now know that the barrel, receiver, and bolt are all matching. There are no markings on the receiver because it was "scrubbed" and reblued during refurb after the King abdicated and the leftists took over. There are two markings on the underside of the barrel that I can't find anything about. So I am going to do a detailed cleaning and see if anything else turns up. Lots of surface rust underneath the wood, lots of crud too, so I am going to play with the best way to get all that off. It was a shooter, so bore is relatively clean, a little dark though.
