I just added a "scout mount"($19.99+shipping from Centerfire Systems) and a 4x32 NcStar LER scope to my M48 Yugo. I wasn't sure how I was going to like the scout mount set-up but it seems to be quite nice. I haven't shot it yet but the sight picture comes up right on line when I pull it to my shoulder. I'm looking forward to using it deer hunting this year. I'm curious as to how much damage the 8mm 196gr 2600fps SP Sellier & Belliot will do compared to .308 150gr 2750fps SP Monarch.

Please post a pic if you can. I have thinking of doing that to a Mauser of mine for some time. Let us know if the mount holds up. I think the damage would be about the same, shot placement would be the key to those rounds.

No doubt about either one being able to drop a deer. I shot a deer last season with my .308 Win 150 gr. soft point. Let me tell yea, it dropped it instantly with a shot that broke its spine. Small entry, larger exit wound. The 8mm is more than enough to drop any big game in N. America.

Looks like this. my rail is the AIM version. holds zero nicely! ![]() The196 gr Sellier & Belliot has a lot more kick then the hunting Federal and Remington 150 gr. The good news is it's cheaper. |

That's the same mount that I got from CF Systems. Or at least it came in an AIM box. I wasn't able to use the thumb nut on the screw because of the full hand guard on my M48. I also used lower rings. I will post some pics as soon as I find my camera.LOL It's in my office... somewhere!

With the massive cavitation effect of the 196 grain 8mm round you should do well . I bet you can expect to see an exit wound at least 6" across and massive internal damage. Does that scope mount require gunsmithing? Michael |

Don357, Does the lower rings provide a better cheek weld to the stock and line up the eyes with the scope? The picture on the thread looks like the scope is too high. Just my perspective. I have seen several Mosin's like that and they look good in the scout mode. Is there lower mounts for the 98k?

Yes there is. 1" weaver rings. Forums are great places to learn that the rings that came with the scope and rail are the wrong size, extra high not 1". Never doing a scout mount before, and thinking everything was the way it should be I called them back about the rings. Sure enough they did send the wrong rings. The 1inch replacement weavers are on there way. Funny thing is the Mauser shot perfectly well even at the elevated height. No problem sighting at all. Thanks for the insight! |

The AIM mount that I purchased does not require any gunsmithing. That is why I chose it. I had originally wanted to put a standard scope on my rifle, but even most of the "no-mod" required some stock inletting, except for a cantilever mount from "Accumount", It replaces the rear sight just like a scout mount but adds a rail that extends back over the reciever. I bought some rings and mounts and was going to get my rifle drilled and tapped, but the cheapest place I found wanted $75 to do the job. I have now found a smith that will do it for $25 and am considering going that way.

OK here's what I've got. I think I'm going to give this an honest try before I go get the rifle D'd&T'd. It comes almost perfectly on target when shouldered and even tho' the sight picture is kinda small, I think it'll be OK.

It look like a nice set up to me. I bought the same scope without doing much research. Afterward I heard a couple of people complain that the scope would not hold zero or it could not stand up to a hi powered mil-surp rilfe. I modified a weaver rail to bolt on in the place of the leaf sight of my M39 but I have not had the chance to shot it yet. I just picked up a Pentax 4-12by40mm gameseaker scope for 80 bucks so I might just replace it. I would love to know how you do with yours when you shoot it Michael |

I had this scope on my .357mag Ruger Blackhawk and had great results. It held zero, and allowed me to do 4" groups at 75yds off sand bags, so I'm really not worried about it holding up. I will post a range report when I get to shoot it. Don

I took my Mauser with me when I went hunting Sat. at the Management Area where they have a public range. After squirrel hunting a while, I went to the range to try and sight in the Mauser. After several rounds, I found out that my boresight laser is WAAAAAY off, but after the old "look down the barrel" trick, I was able to get on the paper. I only took 15rds with me but shots 13, 14 ,and 15, were in a 4" group at 100yds, using 1956 Yugo milsurp ammo. I probably could tighten the group up with a few more shots, but it's at least usuable now. I will work on tightening it up before deer season and post results.
