Found a Spanish Mauser....I think.

I was at the gun shop today and found a cobbled Mauser. I'm pretty sure it's am M93 Spanish Mauser. It's 7x57, but there are no markings to speak of. It has a cobbled military stock with a very faint circle with a faint 1895 in it. It's not a Chilean Mauser. It does have a bent-down bolt, but that may not be original. The trigger has obviously been altered at one point.

Anyway, I felt sorry for it so I had him put it aside for me (150 bucks).

I just had to get it because I've been pining for a 7x57 Mauser since I offed my Spanish short rifle in the late 1980's. I still have some ammo, and brass, and a neck-sizing die. This one is cobbled enough so I won't feel bad fixing it up un-originally.

I'll post some pics when I get it (Halloween would be appropriate).

That's cool.

I also am in the habit of taking Mausers that have already been "messed with" and updating the Sporter stuff.

For some reason I would feel guilty taking a perfectly original K98 and "chopping" it. Of course, I've also been known to buy "sporterized" Enfields and restore them to original just for the rifle itself. I think rifles have feelings too!

I can't wait to see the pics! Bring on gun porn!

Thumbs up

Good deal! I have yet to find an owner of a 7mm Mauser rifle that does not like it - it seems to be one of those 'favorite cartridges' for many shooters.
With some TLC, it should build into a fine hunting rifle.

Yup. I have always felt that the 7X57 was a well-balanced, capable round. I've wanted one to toy with since I got rid of my first one. Hopefully, this one will be worth fixing up.

I checked out the rifle last week. I made a headspace gauge from an unfired case and an .008" shim attached to base. I was able to chamber this piece with no effort, so I passed on the gun. It was quite rough, missing the handguard and bands, had some rust pitting, and somebody had sanded the bolt body with VERY coarse sandpaper.

So, I'm still looking for a 7x57 Mauser........

Sorry to here that Tom. that really sucks. Atleast you didn't get home with it just to learn of that then. I picked up a Chilean M95 about two years ago that has a burnt up barrel and a bubba'd stock for $70 bucks. Bought it as a shooter till I shot it and couldn't hit a thing. Now, it's another pending project, 3rd in line. lol Shooting it was still fun, even though I missed every time. lol Hopefully you can find you another old Mauser that will turn out to be a good shooter, real soon!
