Went to the gun shop saturday and saw a 1895 mauser, the metal was really clean and blued and the wood was in great condition, they wanted $280.00 for it . I could not tell where it was from but it had no crest on top it did have some writing of where it was made on the left side. It was in "7mm", I hope that means 7X57 mauser, because I have a 1912 mauser in that caliber and it is a great shooter. So what do you think is it a wise buy, I looked it up online on gun broker and found a couple of the short rifles for 300 and a long, like the one im looking at for 350. I have not seen the bore but if it's in good condition also is it a good buy?
Is the left side of the receiver solid or does it have a cut out for loading stripper clips. I sounds like a Chileano 95 but it could be a 93. Ask if you can take it out of the stock to look at the metal. If it's a chileano it could be worth the $280. If it's a 93 the answer is that's too much money. We really need good pictures to make the money judgements. YMMV. kwg
If it has writing on the left side it is probably a 1895 Chileno Mauser.
You said it is 7x57 which would fit that model. SG is selling these for $299 right now. You would definately have to check the bore and see how rusty or pitted or dark or brite and shiney it is. This is corrosive ammo and you need to look at the bore before buying. Otherwise if in good to excellent condition it is a good price.
I love mine. And it definitely goes boom when you shoot it.
Here is what a 95 Chileno looks like.

Turns out its a spanish 1893 made by deutche waffen und munitionsfabriken with the crest removed ( no markes of the removal) and the barrel is not bad, rifling is great but there is a tiny bit of pitting and when the sales clerk said I could have it for 260 instead of 280 i bought it! I cleaned it and shot a couple of shots and so far so good, got to take it to the range and see what she can really do. I'm happy and she sure is pretty, will post pic later. Thanks
Those 1893 mausers are better than the spanish ones, and you should have a good mauser that will last another hundred or so years. That price is not bad considering that the prices seem to be going up these days. It used to be you could find an older turkish mauser for under $150, but they are not even seen for under $250 these days.
Thanks Pico, went to the range and this rifle shoots great shot 20 rds of some rem. not bad about 4-5" groups at 50 yds got to go back and shoot more, a little slower and off sandbags when I have time as I was in a rush but just had to take some time out my busy day to shoot her. The pitting in the bore was not pitting ( I don't think) last night I cleaned the barrel again. I ran a cooper brush thru the barrel 5-6 times pulled it and WOW I had never seen a brush that dirty. Used some bore cleaner and ran about 16 patches thru it till clean, oiled another patch then Wow another really dirty patch another 6 or 7 patches then I gave up. Barrel is dark but with nice rifling and she shot great but i'm sure she is in need of another 16 patches,LOL.
hi, you could "plug the muzzle " with a piece of cork or something like that and than fill your barrel with bore cleaner and let sit overnite and that may help clean it up a bit ,,. my 2 cents thanks
