Spanish Mauser 1916 .308 caliber ?

I ran across a Mauser in pawn shop today for $175 that was not in
too bad shape and it had date 1916 and Spain and 308W
stamped on barrel. The barrel is also shorter than
my other three Mauses.
The bolt did not have all the same looking parts that my
Yugo, Turk and K-98 Mausers have but I thought it
would be really spiffy to have one that shot .308 caliber.

I dont think the safety part of the bolt unscrews like
on my other Mausers and I wanted to research the
weapon a little to see if I really wanted it.

Anyone know about Spanish Mausers in 308 from 1916 ?

those are small ring Mausers and were originally made for the 7x57 caliber. they are chambered for 7.62 Nato. do not shoot high power .308 Winchester in them. there is a difference!

While there have been NO verified cases of these M1916 rifles kabooming with factory .308Win ammo, still it is beyond what they were designed for. I shoot only 7.62X51 in mine, and have been handloading to approximate .30-40 Krag pressure level, JIC. Makes for a comfortable shooting experience too - less recoil.

I've got one and I have shot a few full power loads in it before I knew better.
For a long time I've been loading down to .300 Savage pressure. By the way
I've not had any problems.

The receiver is strong enough, Whitehall labs did a test a while ago, but the lugs have a tendency for setback if you are shooting full power loads. This will lead to a long headspace (if it isn't long to start with) which can lead to case or primer rupture. If the case ruptures, the gasses will vent back along the bolt and hit the shooter in the face. The 98's fixed this problen with a flange on the bolt shroud that will deflect gas away from the face. Also better venting in the bolt reduces the gas that will get back that far.
I have modified a couple small rings with a flange on the bolt shroud. It is still best to keep with the lighter CETME loads or use 3030 or 300 Savage pressures for a guide.
