No, Burke, you don't get it. There is NO finish left on my Model 1891! The metal is all in the white! It looks like a stainless steel rifle. I have it coated with Gunzilla, but it definitely needs professional reblueing. There's just too much metal to be blued to try and fix it myself.

If the floor plate is anything to go by, this 1891 has no bluing left. So it will need to be refinished. What's my best bet to come up with a good finish for the metal?

I have used Navel Jelly in many cases like this, after the Jelly takes everything off, any metal is very easily blued. 2 of the rifles I have stripped, I have left bare and just keep them well oiled...the metal is beautiful.
My Uncles Rem .22 stripped and oiled.

Well, I finally got one! A Model 1891 Mosin Nagant. That's the good news.

The bad news is that Bubba had it before me.

Bubba in his infinite stupidity painted all the metal surfaces black, except for the bolt. That, I can deal with. Mineral spirits will remove paint. And maybe I can find out where and when it was made. The fellow I bought it from says it has a Serbian C on it and a defaced Imperial eagle. The bolt's no help. It has Izzy stamps but three different serial numbers, none of which matches the receiver. The floor plate is a mismatch but it works just fine.

What irks me is that Bubba took a saw to a perfectly good walnut stock and chopped it off just forward of the forearm. I've taken the rifle out of that butchered stock and put it into a Finnish 91/30 stock. It's a little long for it but it's a sight better than the incredibly long barrel sticking out of the truncated walnut stock. Anyway, I have a question.

If the floor plate is anything to go by, this 1891 has no bluing left. So it will need to be refinished. What's my best bet to come up with a good finish for the metal?

Yes, it's difficult. I do get lucky sometimes, which is how i got to know the club's Range Master and the current club President, and Louis the Mosin Kahuna, who is the head of the House Committee (he takes care of our buildings, organizing work parties and suchlike. (Louis just got himself a Model 1891 Mosin for $125 at a gun show a couple of hours west of here, and I am so jealous!)

Hey Buddy, yeah that was me. I was doing grips for them until we moved and then I lost my workspace. I'm actively trying to remedy the situation though and hope to be back in business before too long. The only other builder that I know of is Dennis Marschal but he's in Norway or Denmark (?) and we have differing philosophies on grip-building as mine are handmade while his are shaped on CNC machinery and machine checkered. If you're not in a hurry, I'll give ya a shout when I'm up and running again.
    Take Care,
    Tim

I would think the gun is safe to shoot. I would def glue it and clamp it up. Just wipe off all the excess before it dries. I would shop around at Reich and Buymilsurp for a complete stock. Short of that I have a M44 stock with no metal or handguard I'd send you.
