the short answer is I like them both fine for different things. But the long answer is my savage is a 111 it is black steel and on a synthetic stock with the accutriger. I think I paid 400 or 500 for a package deal with sling and scope that I think is a bushnell or leapers or something but I cannot remember and I am at my office so I am unable to check. I have had it for a year or so. the scope is fair and out of the box was almost dead center at 100 yards, but I have intentions of replacing it some time. I am sure they come in 30-06. My Ruger is an m77 markII stainless with a laminate stock that my wife bought for me for my birthday 5 or 6 years ago. the gun was around 700 I put a leupold scope on it that was nearly 1000 dollars. these too come in 30-06. the reason I mention the prices is not to brag but to make a point the 2 firearms are genreally just as dependable as eachother that I have noticed, and I like the accutrigger, I have hunted with both and taken animals with each. both of them are accurate and well functioning guns and will function to your skill level. as for looks the ruger wins out hands down it is a beautiful gun but I have put a few scratches and dings in it and though you would have to have them pointed out to notice them, they make me hurt inside when it happens kinda like scratching a new car, the savage is just a black rifle and the stock is pretty durable and when I bang it or rub through brush I dont get worried. I have target shot with them both and within 100-300 yards the performance is about the same. however around the 150 point and beyond the limitations of the cheaper scope are pretty obvious, I have made 1000 yard shots (on targets not animals) with the ruger. as for the price I would expect the ruger would last longer and I am sure it will, and it is a very smooth action and is all stainless. but you could buy a couple savage packages for the same amount. as for usage if we are hunting where I dont think we will be out of the truck or off the 4 wheelers for long and I am anticipating long shots I take the ruger. If I am going to be walking more then a few hundred yards at a time I take the savage due to its much lighter weight and bugger proof stock. As I think I mentioned in my post though a lot of people think that the lighter rifle kicks more I dont notice much of a difference with these 2 guns both chambered in 300 win mag. but I notice the weight difference after about 20 steps.

As for the 30-06 caliber I have a ruger m77 chambered in this and have hunting with it a lot as well. it will easily make a humane kill on a deer and I have seen elk and black bear taken with 30-06 many times. I choose to hunt with the 300 just because I can. I think over versatility of the 30-06 makes it perfectly acceptable for most of the big game hunting you would encounter in the lower 48. Just my oppinion though. As for scopes I try to put as nice a scope on my rifles as I can afford, sometimes that is more then others. good, quality optics can really make a difference in many conditions such as low light, cold wet weather, bright light etc. Many people will spend 700-800 dollars on a gun and put a 80 dollar scope on it. in my oppinion it is a mistake like having a brand new 4x4 truck and putting slick tires on it, sure it will get around most places but when you really need the tractions you will notice it isnt there. I like leupold (you can get fine scopes from them any where for a few hundred to much more) and swarovski (more price but very nice I have one on my varment gun and it cost 2x the guns cost) they are expensive but you get what you pay for with them. I have bought zeiss and a buddy of mine will only get nikon and they are a bit cheaper but still in the 300+ range. by the way if cost is an issue you can find lots of used m77 out there that are in pretty good shape always becareful when buying used but dont not look. I have gotten some good deals that way on guns that looked like they had ben shot a couple times. some times people will buy a large caliber rifle without really knowing what they are getting into and shoot it once or twice and decide to heck with that then they sell it or pawn it. anyway hope this helps and sorry for the lenghty scattered nature of my answer I just got a few minutes here and there between phone calls this morning ( I only work about 2-3 days aweek so when I am here i get no rest) and lost track a few times in my responce. I am sure there would be folks that agree and disagree and would have good reasons for both
good luck and if I can be any help in the future dont hesitate to ask.
