If it wasn't for Gates (love him or hate him), you wouldn't be on the internet right now. His software proliferated networking, the humongous use of personal computers, the most popular web browser in the world (which I rarely use, but 85 to 95% of people do, depending upon which survey you read), and the most popular operating systems on the earth. If there was something better to use than Windows and DOS, I would. There are many fine, even superior operating platforms out there, but the most widely developed and used is still Windows. THAT is why one would say "God bless Bill Gates".

Okay - thanks for the history lesson. I'm a computer science graduate student. No software I use is made by Bill Gates or Microsoft. I have nothing against him - just wanted to know why we're thanking him. My school was one of the first 4 institutions that was on the network that we now call the Internet. Thanks for edujamacating me.

Returning to the topic....................

the ability to find out about old guns, find and order parts
get scematics, and repair history for particular models has been an invalueable resource.
the internet has helped shooting sports and ccw imeasurably
we are so far from where we where just 15 years ago.

and I like Bill Gates
he started out with nothing and now is the richest man in the world
Thats Cool man..............

So????? The rest of the world obviously thinks differently. Microsoft DOMINATES the home and industrial market. PERIOD. There is no disputing that. The numbers are just plain for all to see. I am no Microsoft fan, by the way. Windows is a PITA, IMHO. As I said, there are superior OS out there, but form most users and applications, Microsoft is a necessity. I can't use most of the software I need on any other OS or any other reasonably priced hardware.

Were it not for Microsoft and IBM clones, the average person would not be able to afford a computer, much less internet access.

Precisely my point. Your SCHOOL was. The average person was not and would not be today were it not for the Microsoft innovations being made affordably to the masses. Their marketing strategy along with the IBM cloning made it possible for average people to do what your school did. This obviously led to good old fashioned capitalism and the development of internet access for profit.

It is obvious that you needed the edujamacating. Thank you for your unnecessary sarcasm. Go write Papa G on the Pope thread and see where your sarcastic attitude gets you.

It's ironic that you bring that up since I was talking to someone the other day about the very same thing.

In fact, I'm sure that if it weren't for the internet I wouldn't have developed my interest in collecting but, rather, might still have only a very select few firearms.

We all know the amount of information that can be found via the internet is mind-boggling but I can't imagine the volumes of literature one would need to have on hand to have the same amount of information.

Exclamation

Well, despite who created what, or which system you prefer, the Internet as a whole is a very remarkable and wonderful thing. Some misuse it, but over-all it's been a boon to society. Just exercise caution - like the Telly, not everything we read is true or safe!
But, I love having the world at my beck & call! The other day, on another site, I was wondering about the career of Sally Ride, our first female astronaut - another member popped up with her whole life history from the net!
It's like a window into your public library, accessible from the comfort of your home. Cool! :right:

True. It is a wonderful thing. However, there is also a lot of misinformation or information without the right references going around. Plagiarism in schools & colleges is getting to be a really big problem. Even little kids are duplicating stuff that they saw in some Internet article, without citing the source.
