Great new Load w/ a question

Hey guys, I finally got to the range and adjusted my sights in with my new front sight post, and now that the gun shoots to point of aim I am very happy. I also found a very wonderful load while shooting some groups I am just wanting to pass it along.

Prvi Brass
WLR Primer
50 gr IMR 4350
180 gr Sierra Spitzer .311 dia.
OAL 3.000"

At 50 yards with this load I was getting a little over an inch group which should get me minute of deer at 100 yards. It is not a max load but it is not a light load either... the max load of IMR 4350 is 52.7 so there is 2.5 grains to work with there.

Now for a question that probably should be in the handloading section, I bought a can of H-4350 because my Local gun shop was out of the IMR, is it safe to interchange these powders if I drop a grain or two and start there? I know they are close to the same but still don't want to get hurt.

Thanks guys,
Joshua

How did you come up with the 50 grain load of the IMR?
I have no idea if the two powders are similar...
You should check load data published for H-4350; 7.62 x 54R caliber and bullet weight around 180 grains. Most load data is published for .308 and not .311 bullets, however weight is most important.

Start low, work up as you always should...

My IMR 4350 load came straight from the Hornady reloading manual #8, they are normally within a grain or 2 but I still will call Sierra I think and see what they say, but that will have to wait till monday

Does IMR publish their own load data?
I use Hodgdon (Varget, primarily) powders and their load data.

In loading for both the .308 and the 7.62 x 54R, I've found that Sierra's load data is waayy off from Hodgdon's. In both calibers, for the selected bullet weight, Hodgdon's minimum load is more than Sierra's max load. Confusing, to say the least.

Given that they're the powder manufacturer, I've chosen to go by Hodgdon's data- based on the opinion that Sierra is being too conservative with their load data. That's just my $.02...

Hodgdon - IMR - Winchester reloading data says 51gr. to start, 55gr. max load with H4350

I was actually getting ready to post that ninja, I am going to try the 51 gr load as that is the same velocity as the IMR load at 50 gr and see what happens.
