good luck with the project. i agreee with moose on a pinned mount. there just aint much in that sight base you can use to make a good solid mount. i'll be rooting for you nonetheless!

Yeah, I tried one that mounted to the sight base. There is no way to keep it from rocking up and down. It has some set screws, that are supposed to stabilize it, but they didn't. I replaced it with one that clamps to the dovetail. It works fine. I don't need a scope on my Finn though. It out shoots my ability to see the target, so I don't worry about it.

So ya want to get into the scope mount business? Test, test, and test some more, than make several redesigns, scrap more designs than you'll ever let anyone know. Then improve your parts. Then figure out how to make all the pieces faster, lighter, and less expensive. Want to go to the range, drag races, or watch a movie? No! your in the scope business now, get your priority's straight man. Yeh its fun but I sure wish I'd invented the "George Foreman" grill instead, one in ten house holds is not going to buy a Mosin Nagant scope mount. I'm just messing with ya , good luck with your experimenting and keep us posted.

Well I can assure all of y'all that I won't sell it if I think it is junk and doesn't work. I still believe in American craftsmanship and true American craftsmen don't sell junk for a profit. If it works, it will be well made. If it doesn't work, it will be scrap.

Well I contacted the Boltman to see about getting a turned down bolt so I could be able to measure dimensions off of it. He said he doesn't have any bolt bodies and I would have to send my bolt in to get it turned down. There is also a three month waiting list! The problem is, I don't want to modify my original bolts on my two Mosins. I think my idea is slowly getting scrapped !

Just buy another bolt, and do it the way jmeck shows.

How to make a mosin nagant turned down bolt handle slideshow by jmeck - Photobucket

If you are unable to do the welding, you don't have to pay a gunsmith to do it. Anyone, who can TIG weld steel properly, can do it. It's only metal.

as long as you've got your bolt working smoothly, silver solder works just fine as well. less work too.

How much did you pay for the Mosins? Unless you have some rare all matching model in the $300 and on up price range I really doubt it would be devalued any by Modding your bolt. I'd get up with Max Shephard, he does great bolt work and has a minimal wait as well.

It is a captured force matched Finnish 91/30 so I don't want to mod the bolt. I may just buy another beat up 91/30 or something and then get the bolt modded.
