Eye relief scope: 6 inches too short?

So I've recently purchased a 91/30 Mosin and got it all cleaned up and redone. I'm wanting to scope it like many others have done, but need a little help with the amount of eye relief I will need. I just bought a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 scope from Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i00_details

It has a 6 inch eye relief, but is that enough? I know most are buying around 10 inch LER scopes, but I thought this one might do the job. I am able to return it to amazon with no prob if it doesn't work, which is why I bought it to try. Anyone else try a 6 inch EER scope? Thanks for the input. And yes, I have researched this, including the reviews on amazon, but thought I would get some feedback from the people on the forums. Thanks!

I have yet to find a 3X9 that had enough eye relief for a scout scope setup.

But I also ain't putting on a scope that costs more than the rifle on one, either.

A shooter would not want the eye relief so close that the scope slams into their eyeball when the bullet is fired. Every shooter has their personal eye relief distance; it must be verified for comfort.

Thanks for chiming in gandog, I've seen you a lot on here as I've been lurking... Yea I kinda got it set up tonight but my stock is still drying from staining so it wasn't a really accurate test for it. Got it on the barrel and held it up. My nose has to be touching the rear of the barrel (where the rear bolt goes through it) before I can see a full sight out of it. It's probably cutting it a bit close. It's also hanging over the bolt a bit. And I completely agree with you, no way am I putting a scope that costs more than the gun on it! Thanks again for the help, hope to be more active on here as time passes.

Ranger- Very true about the eyeball slamming, but I don't think that's an issue here. I mean we're still talking 6 inches! That'd be a hell of a recoil! I'm more looking for the comfort of holding it while still being able to see the full scope view.

Thanks for your help guys, I'll probably wait until I get it all together and fire it before I decide whether I'm going to keep the scope or not. Like I said, it was from Amazon, so I do have 30 days to return it if it doesn't work out.

It definitely doesn't make much sense to me.

I've seen a 10/22 with Leica glass on it before...so...

I don't think 6" eye relief would be good for a scout setup, however.

After mounting it to just the barrel without the stock and seeing how close I had to get (and after watching videos of how others are positioned when firing the gun) I decided to return the Bushnell. It was a decent scope, but as others stated, not enough eye relief.

Ended up buying a Simmons ProHunter 4x32 pistol scope. I've seen some others with this set up and it seems to do pretty good. Up to 20 inches of eye relief and it was $76 on Amazon. Not bad, hopefully this will work better! I'll update when I get it on and everything back together.

And I realize this is probably an old topic, but thanks for all the positive feedback instead of the "search function newb" comments. It's much appreciated and after searching for 3 days, didn't find much on this particular setup. Thanks again!

Did you check these out?

Amazon.com: NcStar Pistolero 2-7x32E Red Illuminated Pistol Scope: Sports & Outdoors

Veriable, illuminated, and doesn't cost much more.

I'm happy with mine.

I did see that one... I was just worried about the quality of it. Has it held up pretty good for you? How many rounds do you have with it on? Simmons has been around a while so I thought I would try this one out. And 4x is about the most I need for my shooting... I might look into this scope if the Simmons doesn't work though. Thanks for the link

I've only had the chance to fire 120 rounds with my set up so far, but it's staying put and I'm happy with it.

The reason I asked about the NCStar was because the link you posted was for an NCStar 4x32 and not a Simmons.

Yea I went back and looked at that... I actually didn't put any links in the post, I just wrote what I was getting. I don't know how it showed up, do links insert themselves automatically on this forum??? It was to Newegg right? I haven't even looked on there for scopes, didn't know they carried any! Weird... Well I'm glad it's working out for ya, hopefully I'll have the same luck with mine and won't have to spend any more money on optics!

That is strange. I didn't know typing on here would do that either.
Good luck with your new toy.

I have an NC Star 2X7 on one of mine, and a red dot scope on another one. I prefer the red dot even though there is no magnification for fastest time on target. Prefer the magnification for accuracy.

Just remember the setup you use is only as good as the scope mount used. Don't use those 10 buck fleabay specials.

I actually grabbed one off of Amazon as well. Looked like people had pretty good luck with it both on amazon and on other forums... Hopefully it should work out with a bit of locktight.

Well the Simmons scope works great with this setup. Got it all put back together after staining and got the scope mounted up! Haven't been able to shoot it yet, but looking forward to it! I'll report back with how it does sighting and shooting. Oh, and I'll get some pics up one of these days...

Personally,

I would not consider six inches to be extended eye relief on any firearm.

Well it took a little longer to dry but I got it all finished up a weeks ago. It was my first time staining anything, so I would have done it slightly differently if I did it again, but it turned out nice. The sights were soldered on, so that was fun to take off... about 10 minutes with a propane torch got the job done though. Got the brass all shined up as well. Doesn't look too bad if you ask me I'll be shooting it later this week. Test fired it twice once it was back together and everything worked as it should have. Cleaned with windex right after... The eye relief on this scope is perfect btw. This setup works great. Put loctite on everything when I put it on, so hopefully it won't be going anywhere! Here are the pics!
