Don't have a mosin to try it out in, but looked at shipping and cost and all that.....in order to equal a 440 spam can from the same site, it would cost you almost double the price.
I noticed that ammo too. I only have Silver Bear handy, just because I am in the habit of buying a box or two when I see it on sale at Big 5 (not the best deal, but that is the only store that carries the caliber). Now I am pretty sure the Silver Bear is 174 grain FMJ, but I have shot that 203 grain soft point Brown Bear before, and it was fun (different recoil impulse, you could tell it was a slow heavy slug).
My Finnish M39 realy likes that Brown Bear 203gr ammo, it gets right about 1.5 MOA. Another really good but not cheap 54R ammo is Wolf Gold 180Gr SPBT I think I paid $13 or $15 per box of 20 the last time I could find it, but they shoot very well out of my Sporterized M38 carbine.

Anything said here is my PERSONAL opinion nothing more
I bought three cases of the corrossive. I read up on Empirearms.com about his cleaning process. It works and works well. I have shot brown bear and wolf and I can't tell much difference from the cheap stuff. Maybe it's just me. My local guys say they don't really see the difference either. I got 2640 rounds for right at $485.00. I'd have paid near twice that for the same ammount of brown bear or wolf. Maybe I'm wrong but after reading up on it on empirearms, I decided if I'm not gonna reload I'm shootin' corrossive. I'm gonna buy two more cases in a couple weeks. After that I'm gonna try to buy a case a month for a while. It'll run out one day and I want to have plenty.
Simple stuff like water or Windex will take care of the corrosive salts. Or you can go a little more conventional and just buy a quart jug of Hopes No 9
I got one off Amazon for $16 and use it on all of my mil-surp rifles.
I am not yet brave enough to try the cheap Eastern Bloc steel cased corrosive ammo on my modern auto pistols or AR-15.
Maybe one day but not yet.
For a gun like a Mosin I would think that the newer stuff at twice the cost is simply unnecessary.
I forgot to add that I bought 880 rounds from AIM Surplus. The ammo is almost twice as old as me
It is copper brushed steel cased ammo over a light lead ball with a steel core.
I paid $171.07 for 880 rounds including shipping.
They even threw in a free wooden crate
I did not get the promised can opener though. I had to find alternate methods of getting into the spam can.

Yours may not be, but I thought I didn't get the opener either. It was tucked away in the crate and I like to never found it. But I figured it was there so I tore that crate apart looking for it. Then the wife says, "Hey, is that it?" Oh, there it is. . I bet it's there. I concur with the statement, "For a gun like a Mosin I would think that the newer stuff at twice the cost is simply unnecessary." That's what they have always had shot through them. I think if it was good then it probably aint that bad now.

This may sound strange. But could you put yours back in the crate with the ammo cans and then take a picture of where you found it?
I still have the original cardboard box and crate and cans. It is possible I overlooked the opener but I have pulled both cans out as well as the box and I did not see the opener.

Well ****, now I feel like an idiot. I just found it. It was underneath the cardboard inside the wooden box and was TAPED down to the wood. I had never pulled up the cardboard on the floor of the box and never noticed it sitting under there.

Had the wooden crate been opened? Maybe look again.
My opener was attached to the inside of the lid.
There was a place cut into the lid just for the opener.
Sure makes opening the cans a lot quicker and easier.

that's classic! we should start a, "how do i find my spam can opener" thread, to go with the "how do i open a spam can" thread.

I realize this post is kinda old, but I just wanted to throw my .02 worth in...When I purchased my crate of ammo, and opened the lid, I found my can opener staring me in the face from the hinge side of the inside of the crate. Not attached anywhere, not hidden. Just sitting there, kinda saying "use me and open these NOW!" I resisted the urge and both cans, including opener, are sitting in a drawer under my bed. I figure I'll pull out the opener when I get a can of shootin ammo.
