In search of a new stock!

Ok, so here's my latest pan. I need to find an M44 stock in useable condition so I can put the receiver/barell from my 91/30 into it. It'll be "kinda" sporterized without "really" being sporterized. I want to do this so I have a semi-free floating barell and a little help with the cooling process.

If anyone knows where I can get a mil-surp m44 stock for a reasonable price, please let me know!

Kind of sporterized without looking real sporterized?

That does not compute.

How hard would it be to make a stock?

What if I just bought a 91/30 and shortened the stock to the length I want?

I think it would be pretty easy it would just be a matter of cutting the stock to the right length and adjusting the caps and that one band to the new size of the handguard and stock

What you do is buy a good piece of hardwood a little larger than the stock you want to make. And then, you remove all of the wood, that doesn't look like a rifle stock. Simple.

If it was me doing it, you would end up with a toothpick. I couldn't even square a block by hand in High School.

That might be what I'll have to do, but if i can find an M44 stock I'd rather have that.

As for making one, i really want to try that oit as well.

Go buy a synthetic stock from ATI, usually drops right in and looks nice, you can change it back to standard just by replacing it in the original stock. If it isn't a drop in fit, it usually takes a few minutes sanding on the stock to make it fit, I've done 3 of them, only had to sand on one.

That's an idea, but I'd like to stay away from the synthetics if i can.

Boy, have you looked at some of the horror stories of people who were told that and found out different? Seems to be hit or miss with their stocks.

Or, if you have a really nice piece of hardwood you could also get a 4 foot 2x6 and make all your mistakes on that. Then copy the final dimensions to the hardwood. A bit more work, but a lot safer.

This would be an inexpensive little exercise if you bought this one and made a few repairs and mods....
