A new found respect

So I got my first spam can today. Russian Silver tip from SGammo. I didn't get a can opener and I didn't even have any pull tabs. So in the absence of the proper tools for the job I improvised. Using my multitool I punched a whole in the can and then using the pliers and a cheap pair of wire cutters/strippers I cut a hole in the can just large enough to be able to pull out a few rounds. And I have to say I have a new found respect for anyone who has ever opened one of these cans.

I've often wondered about the "ammo haulers" bring ammo to the lines
They had to be strong n tough

They used blowtorches to shave with in those days!

I'm pretty sure those cans were spec'ed out to survive a 20 megaton direct hit. Even with the canopener they're a royal PITA.

I would not want to shave with a blow torch. Bad enough back in college I had a Chef (I went to school to cook and now I'm a banker. Life's funny that way) who threatened to shave me with a kitchen knife

They probably didn't need rifles if they came across an enemy they probably just caved in the guys skull with one of those cans, the **** things are heavy enough. It took me about 40 minutes to get in this much.

Last can I got, I got the made for it tool. Much easier, only took about 10 minutes or so to get it all the way open, with no bleeding.

On the other hand, those cans, well, the ammo in 'em is still good, even though it's older than me, and I'm older than dirt!

Same with the corrosive primer--they store one heck of a lot longer than the non-corrosive, so they can be seen as a blessing, as well as a pain.

All I can say (Is there a joke there?) is my can opener opened my last can of Russian right up.

I heard there was a thread on here about opening ammo cans. You should check it out.

there is and the general consensus seemed to be that you either had a can opener or u went at it with whatever semi appropriate tool you had. in my case that was a multi-tool and wire cutters. and for the record I did see if my modern can opener would clamp on it there and i wasn't quite that lucky :P

Bigelkcanoe: If someone has a spare I still have a lot of can left to cut open and I would be forever grateful. That picture there is as far as I've gotten it open so far.

aaplayer, the simplest way to open them without the genuine opener is with a chisel and a hammer, just like you would cut open a metal barrel. That is stuff that you can get from your local Sears, auto parts store, home center, or hardware store.

Ahhhhhhh the joy of an impregnable spam can!! First one I got was about 40 minutes of me cursing and grunting with a multi tool and a pry bar. Got it a third open and just dumped it out! Can openers are a godsend! Just imagine losing your tool in the midst of combat and needing to open ur can!

I'm betting if you lost your can opener in combat were put on the front lines to smash nazi heads in with your unopened cans
