174 Grain Bullet With Varget?

Hello,

I'm wondering what loads are for 174 grain bullets and Varget? I'm getting starting loads of 39.5 grains and 43 grains, but then a decent accuracy load is stated to use 42 grains of Varget.

The bullet I'll be using is this one:

Graf & Sons - HRN 303/7.7MM(.312) 174gr BULLET BTHP 100/BX

It looks like it may be made specifically for Graf's, but I do not know as the bullet profile doesn't match the description.

I cannot find mention of a 3130G outside of Graf's, either.

Anyway, when I was shooting heavier bullets before from the Gew88, 42 grains was scary accurate.

Not really sure where I should start.

Also, if anyone has any pictures of the actual bullet, or can confirm the picture, it would be appreciated. I have in my mind pictured a spitzer HP boattail. Just not sure how accurate that idea is.

Hopefully these get here soon!

Regards,

Josh

You're right - they screwed up on the pic! Hope the ones that come are truly what is described. I am interested in your accuracy results.
I do not and haven't ever used Varget, but I may try it in the near future. So many shooters like it.

You got me on that bullet Josh.

If it was a special run for Graf's, the price is quite reasonable.

No help on Varget loads, but it should be a good choice.

Graf And Sons does have special bullet runs made up just for them. You can't find Hornady bullets for Steyr M95's except through Grafs.

Here's a typical load workup.
Sorry about the wind from the left.
42.5 gr of all these powders are where my guns live.
Notice the circled 175 it was too hot.

300 yard target with 43.5 of Varget, 174 grain SMK. Even with a 15 mph full value wind, sub moa (bottom right was all me...)

Josh the description in Graf's ad is not correct for the HRN 3130 bullet. It is indeed a round nosed bullet as pictured. If you want a FMJBT bullet this is probably what you want.

Graf & Sons - HRN 303/7.7MM(.3105) 174g BULLET FMJ-BT 100/BX

The picture is wrong. They are HPBT. I bought 500 of the last run they had. They also have no cannelure. They shoot great in a couple of my Mosin Nagants that slug a little large. I shoot them with 47grs of Varget.

Sorry Rex, I just saw your post after making my post. I looked up the number on the ones I bought and they were 3130C. Maybe the C means something.

I could be totally wrong about it Clyde. I was mainly going by this info on the #3130 from Hornady's website, but Graf's product may be totally different.

Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Bullets :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: .312 303 CAL :: 303 Cal .312 174 gr InterLock® RN

Hi Folks,

Thank you.

I will start at 42 grains as suggested, and I will also take pics of the bullets when they arrive.

I'm thinking they may be similar in profile to the Sierra Match King, only with a hollowpoint that is intended to work. I hope so anyway.

Even if it is some sort of hybrid round nosed hollowpoint with a boat tail, I'll not complain!

I think the letter after the 3130 denotes who it's made for. G for Graf's, likely.

The only HRN3130C I can find is on a site in New Zealand, Hornady BTHP 303 174gr | Hornady | Taieri Arms , and they're out of stock.

Special run for them, maybe, with extras sold in the States?

Thank you,

Josh

Hi Clyde,

That's what I'm hoping these will be like.

I was messing with my business account when they went to charge shipping, so it was delayed a day as I watched helplessly as the charge tried to go through!

I called them immediately and told them I figured they were closed at the time and it was safe to do the work!

They understood, but I'm expecting the package tomorrow. Would have been here yesterday otherwise. Argh!

Anyway, I'll take pics.

Josh

Hi folks,

They came today, and pictures to follow. Everyone is out of Varget, including me! I had to settle on H4350.

Do you have any loads for H4350 under 174 grain bullets in a 7.62x54R? I'm going to go look at the data centers and such now. The only powder my books list is IMR4350. I figure it's close but not exactly the same.

Thanks,

Josh
