Antique Gun, 70s Ammo, And an Old Fart

I've been playing around with my 1938 91/30, adding a 2-7x32E NCStar LER scope and Limbsaver recoil pad. I didn't like the hard rubber pad I first bought, so much I gave it away and paid the postage to boot. =^)
Love the scope and the Limbsaver.

I wanted a nicer finish so took off the old one. I liked the patina I found under all that darkness, so ended up only lightly sanding, lightly staining, and adding a few coats of poly. Ended up looking like this.

I did some polishing on the trigger assembly and that really helped my groups. I have not bedded the receiver, or floated the barrel, and my last group this morning, shooting Bulgarian Silver tip at 100 yards, looked like this.

Very, very happy here. =^)

I used these because they have a vertical set screw and double screws everywhere else.
AccuShot Premium Hi-Profile Airgun .22 Ring for 1-Inch Scope: Amazon.com: Sports & Outdoors

I figured out where I wanted the rings and drilled a shallow dimple down into the dovetail for the set screw to seat in.

This set up has not budged through over 400 rounds of pure fun.

SWFA Mounts, Rings and Bases Warne Mounts Warne .22 Rimfire Rings
The strongest small bore scope rings available. Designed to fit a very wide selection of rifles and fit both 3/8” and 11mm dovetails. This is made possible by using a solid steel asymmetrical reversible clamp that can be flipped 180° and used on wider or narrower dovetails for best fit.
the bold is the Mosin dovetail to a "T".

I have these rings with the set screw, and also drilled a shallow hole to set the screw in to. Haven't shot with them yet, and have another pair on order. It looks like they should stay pretty solid. I was expecting both rings to have the set screw, so I contacted the person I ordered them from. He is sending me another pair so I can have 2 with set screws in place on the dovetail I am mounting a scope to.

Gunney, you can't use these same mounts on an m44, M38, or 91/38 carbines. The rear sights are on a sleeve that's pinned to the barrel, there is no dovetail to mount to. However, a 91/59 carbine can utilize this same type of LER modification, since it's still got the 91/30 rear sight in place. You can also do this type of scout scope set up on 91/30s and M91s.

For free???

I have not needed the second vertical set screw, but it can't hurt either.
I've had great luck with this set up not moving.

Thanks Axeman and fuzzy. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out and love shooting it more each time out. Probably because I'm getting more accurate with it. It's getting to where I have no problem going through at least 4 paper packets, (80 rounds) on each outing. =^o

I wouldn't have done that before the Limbsaver, for sure.

I was concerned at first that even after a good cleaning, the bore was looking pretty dark, but after shooting a whole can of silver tip and by giving her a good cleaning after every trip, the bore kept getting better looking with more and more shine. Now it's getting that mirror look. I didn't expect that to happen.

I also have a set of NCStar rings that came with my scope that I'll probably never use.

What size Limbsaver did you get? I ordered off of Amazon because the reviews had people saying they bought for their Mosin. They shipped me a size small/medium. It is a little loose but it isn't going to fall off. I am just wondering if there is a smaller size that might fit better.

mwilks,
I bought mine at Wally World for $20. I think it said small.
It works great.

My buddy got one and thought his was a little loose, so he put double sided tape on the butt plate and put it back on. Seems to have made him happy.

Since putting that recoil pad on, my shoulder feels better, but it has cost me considerably more in ammo. =^o

Got mine from Wally World too. Small fits Russians. Medium fits Finns and my Garand.
