| I have 8, M-44 Barreled Recievers..Ideas?? So I lucked up on 8 M-44 barreled recievers that have been stripped of all but 6 bayonets, ( I got them all for $35 shipped :right: These are mainly just going to be my little projects. So with that in mind, what kind of ideas can you all pitch to me? I actually thought about making a rather large bolt action pistol out of one of them I already have a Finn M-39 , my baby, and still in restoration. And a 1924 Hex 91/30, less the stock, so I can interchange parts with this one. |

| Nope, bad idea. The BATF says, "once a 'rifle' - never a pistol can it be!" We don't want to see you land in Club Fed. But you do have the workings of some good "brushguns" - add the synthetic stocks and whatever other hardware that's needed.

| Super Moderator ![]() | Dog gone it those would make nice pistol build donors. Frankly, compared to the price of a different pistol action like that, I'd consider the $200 NFA tax cost effective if you decided to go that route. Might have to check state hunting laws though.

| Yeah you are right, I keep my..inocence..and always stay legal. But technically then wouldn't a Savage Striker pistol be the same principal? I mean it's pretty much the same rifle action but on a pistol frame. But I did plan on cuting one down to legal 16" and making a nice litle brush gun out ot one. |

| There was a big hullaballoo about this awhile back on another forum. Once the receiver is serialed as a rifle, it can't be cutdown into a pistol, just as a pistol frame can't be used to make a carbine with buttstock and longer barrel. The only exception to this is the Thompson Center Contender - and that was a hard-fought battle with BATF for TC. I've always wanted to do a bolt-action .22LR pistol - but I don't like the idea of being Bubba's new squeeze in Club Fed either . . . Now, BRG's idea of using an 80% AK receiver or a flat kit, and making a handgun is legal - it hasn't been a rifle before!

| Super Moderator ![]() | My idea was to do exactly what would be illegal EXCEPT actually doing the NFA paperwork and registering it as a short barreled rifle. If it was a pistol from birth then you wouldn't need any tax, paperwork, or approval, just make sure it's within the law. I don't know how you'd do a Mosin nagant receiver as a pistol build. The only economical way to build from a blank is with the AK, whose blank and finished receivers are very simple, even if the characteristics that define it as a firearm afterwards are distinct. I believe Thompson's case was actually on converting a pistol to rifle and back again, not converting rifle to pistol. I believe even a TC rifle would be illegal to convert to pistol without NFA paperwork.

| Glue them to an old plastic lawn chair, move to Santa Fe, and sell it as "Modern Art" for about $2000.
