Hallelujah; decent stripper clips at last!

Third time's the charm, I guess. I ordered some so-called "unissued" clips quite a while back over the internet, and found out they were unissued because they weren't surplus; they were after-market pieces of !@#$.

I tried again at a gun shop a couple of months ago, and got some soft brass things that the rims would dig into and hang on like grim death.

But at the same gun show where I bought the Albanian, I checked every single booth for stripper clips (I'm nothing if not thorough when I get obsessed), and found one crotchety-looking old gentleman with some genuine-looking surplus clips. He wanted two bucks apiece, he had no history for them, and he didn't really care whether I bought 'em or not. I got a half-dozen, so I could properly fill the Russian double-pocket ammo pouch that came with my 91/30. Now I wish I'd bought an even dozen.

They actually work! I stuff one into the slot, stick a thumb on the top round, and slide all five rounds into the magazine in one smooth motion. On a couple of them, I had to crimp the ends just a tad to keep the bottom round from hanging down. Otherwise, no problem.

It may seem a simple thing. But maybe I'm just simple, because it makes me happy every time I fish a clip out, stuff the rounds in, and drop the clip into my pocket until I'm ready for a refill break...

I'm with ya brother, stripper clips are the greatest invention since beer! It's really sad that decent clips are so hard to find for the M\N's. If I had the money, I would start producing them myself.

Just today, someone told me that clips for the Enfield or Mauser would work on a 91/30. Anyone have any insight on that?

Them Russians sure are clever arent they. I'm not too sure, but wasn't one of their mortar tubes purposely built to use American rounds if captured

Mauser clips - NO. Totally different rim size. Enfield clips - hmmm . . . need to try that one - I got lots of Enfield clips.

The US mortar is 81mm, and the Soviet used 82mm, IIRC. Don't know if the rockets of one will work in the other. Maybe an ex-ground-pounder can answer?

The Enfield clips don't seem to work

I just tried some Enfield clips in my Finn. The rim is too wide on the 7.62x54 rounds to fit comfortably into the clips, and the clips don't fit into the Mosin clip slot.

Dang. I was hoping...

Striper clips got lots

I got lots of striper clips for 7.62x54 with surplus Ammo I purchas at a gun show. In Ontario Canada there is a gun show every sunday if you keep an eye out for them. The only thing you have to do is be willing to travle a bit.

Someone told me that some of the Russian surplus a few years ago came packed in stripper clips. Anyone know whether that's true or just an urban legend?

I do have a case of 7.62X39 that came packed on strippers, nice stuff!
I will buy a case of 7.62X54 if I ever find one that is packed on strippers and I will gladly pay more for it !

I'd pay premium prices for a few hundred rounds of 7.62x54 already in clips...

And by the way, i just answered my own question. the following info site lists stripper-loaded ammo from 1961:

http://mosinnagant.net/r2ssia.asp

Now all i have to do is find some for sale.

I made an interesting discovery concerning stripper clips and loading the mosins from them.In some mosins because of the rim on the cartridge, the shells have to be stacked with the lips forward overlapping and not behind or they will jam up, The first round has to be ahead of the second round which has to be ahead of the third round etc. Anybody else encounter this ???

I don't really know if it makes a difference or not, though. I haven't experimented.

He seems to be "temporarily out of stock," but it's a good site to have bookmarked anyway.
