Well, sold the Finn, got 2 more Mosins!

Well, after an extensive chamber polishing session last night I came to the conclusion that some of the pitting just wasn't going to come out of that M28 I bought recently ( enough was left to still leave craters in the shell casings ). It was very disappointing.
So I took it to the Gunshow today to see what I could bring back for it.
I ended up trading it to knock some price off of 2 Mosins I was eyeballing. I ended up walking out with a REALLY nice M38 and another 91/30 with a Hex reciever!
I know, I probably should have hung on to the Finn because they are rare. But it just wasn't fun for me to have a gun I couldn't enjoy shooting, so that's why I got rid of her. I don't like collecting wall hangers!
I'll find another Finn someday, but until then I have 2 new Mosins to go blow things up with. I can't wait to shoot that M38.... can you say flamethrower?

Sorry to hear about the Finn. But I don't particularly like wallhangers either.

I'm the same way. I'll trade stuff and people will think I'm stupid. But I gotta go with what I enjoy. Something that's gonna stay in the cabinet or hang on the wall is out the door pretty quick.

Heres some pics of my new M38 and 91/30 I scored today. The M38 is in an M44 stock, but what a pretty stock it is! What kind of wood did they use to give it that striped look?

These are some interesting markings on the 91/30!

Holy *&^%, do I have an Ex Dragoon??

Edit: I know it's either a rearsenaled M91 or a rearsenaled Dragoon, but how do I tell? The proofs look the same!

Amen Troy, we may not always agree on politics, but a gun hanging on the wall is like marrying a devout lesbian-she may look good but you'll never be satisfied with her!

Dave, those new toys look mighty fine and I think you done good! I believe the wood is either Birch or Beech and I would definitely research those markings-I've seen a lot of M\N's but have never seen one with markings that extensive or clear.

Well, I know it's a Tula Reciever by the star, but the pics I have seen up close of the dragoon and M91's markings look the same! Both have the C.C.C.P. inscription, so how can you really tell them apart?
Back to the books! :right:

Hmmm, from what I read on 7.62X54R.NET I have an ExDragoon! Tula only made M91's up to 1926... It made dragoons up to 1932, and as you can see from the pic above mine is from 1927!
I can't believe I just accidentally picked up an Ex Dragoon! There were about 6 or 7 91/30 looking Mosins at the Gun show today. I snagged this one because it had unique markings on it I had never seen before, and the stock looked a bit different than the rest. Funny thing is that it was one of the cheaper 91/30's I saw.
This just made my night!!
Yet again I stumble on something good unintentionally! :jaw:

I only wish Alaska was closer Rich because I would have gladly taken you up on that offer! I would have much rather sold it to someone I know who would appreciate it for what it is. Prices have gone up down here, they were wanting like $200 asking price for M44's!
That's odd that there weren't any Mosins at all, I thought that was usually a Gunshow staple from the few I have been to.
But on the brighter side of things I ended up getting a hold of an Ex Dragoon that is in really good shape. The markings caught my eye when I was browsing through the Mosins so I snagged it, and it ended up being something neat! Not only that, but it is Range worthy too! I made sure to bring a flashlight with me this go around to inspect the chambers and bores so I wouldn't end up with another wall hanger!
I'm going back to the gunshow tomorrow to show a friend of mine around. If ya want, I can get the dealers contact info so you might still be able to get a hold of that Finn.

I got $200 for it ( after a bit of haggling ), so it might end up costing you somewhere the ballpark of your offer to me. I will make sure to get his info tomorrow when I go back. Next time I will give you first dibs I promise!
What do ya think about my new rifles by the way?

I know how much it could be worth, but I thought alot of that is also dependant on bore and chamber condition. I've seen a couple on Auction Arms and GunBroker go for over 400, but they were in better shape than mine was.
I guess it's all really what the collector is willing to pay for his purposes, right? :right:
If you had a way to wire me the money I would gladly do it for ya Rich, but for now I'll stick with the origional plan of getting ya his contact info. I just hope he didn't put the thing out on the rack after I sold it to him!

2 fairly large sized Pimples on the cases... Large enough that i had to jam a cleaning rod down the barrel and hit it with a hammer to get the casings out. The rounds went in very smoothly, but after the charge made the case adhere to the chamber it went downhill. That's why I didn't shoot more than 5 rounds, I was afraid i was gonna break the extractor!!! It shot well, but with a problem like that I would hardly classify it as a shooter if ya know what I mean.

Ok...The Chamber had Pits and the shells were blowing into the pits...Where at on the casing ? By the neck, Midway, or by the Rim ???

Smack dab in the middle! Has a pretty deep pit on one side, and a lesser one on the other side. I couldn't think of anything to fill them in with. I know you are a gunsmith, is there a way you can safely repair a pitted chamber?

Oh yes...I have 2 ways of repairing it One is with Belzona Compound. the other is to remove the barrel, turn it down on the shoulder and turn the same amount off the face with a lathe and then Run a reamer in the Chamber an VOILA !

Man, I wish I had some of that equipment, I woulda fixed it myself! Well, with the proper supervision of course! LoL
I was pretty sad to see it go, but it just wasn't good for me unless it would shoot. I do plan on getting another Finn in the future, just wait til I start getting my GI Bill for school and then money will no longer be a problem!
