I'm not sure how the K-31 got in the mix but as for the two; SKS versus the MN....unless I have missed something over the days the SKS is the ONLY one that will guarantee another QUICK second shot. That was simple! LOL

if i was in a combat situation i would take the sks over the two because in this day and age the combat is close range anyways

Yeah I'm having the same problem.....I want an SKS, I can get one at a pawn show for 230, and that's with a scope. I know that nagants are going to be sold at a bill goodman gun show that is coming to my town next week. I'm not sure how much they will cost but i really like the way this 230 dollar SKS looks....I'm torn between the two, although i dont care about which one can hunt a deer better. Anyone have any advice on which gun i should get? what are the pros and cons of each?

I would go with the Mosin, more power, better sights. But if you are hunting in thick cover with close shots the SKS should be fine. I hunted with a SKS once , but that turned out to be a deerless walk thru the woods so I have no personal exp. with the 7.62x39 on anything besides paper targets and pumpkins.

i say go with the mosin, ammo is cheap as heck, and my m38 is a tackdriver the thing practilly aims it self! i know this is not the case with all mosins, my 91/30 is not nearly as acurate. and the kick is not as bad as some would lead you to believe, you just have to know what to expect, and/or get a butpad. sks's are great aswell, but it think for price on both gun and ammo go with the mosin, gives you the option of longer shots aswell.

I own neither of the guns but would probably take the sks for practicality, less than a hundred yards i'm sure it would do the job fine. | |

I love the sound of the Mosin's bark. Then there is something addicting about the SKS' pop. I would choose the Mosin. More power and more authority. Plus, if you hit what you aim at the first time you don't need a quick follow up shot.

Let's see... for hunting. 180gr. SP at 2600fps vs. 124gr HP at 2400fps. How about 203gr? I love my SKS, it's a ton of fun and pretty accurate, but the laws of physics... being what they are... make the 7.62 x 54R the round of choice. 70 years of sniper rifles seem to support that idea. For close-combat, the SKS wins hands down. So buy one of each (and an AK for even more fun). Last edited by Geo M44; 03-30-2008 at 11:11 PM. |

Since no one ever mentioned it in three pages worth of material, I will... CHECK YOUR STATE/LOCAL HUNTING LAWS!!! Some states require a magazine of 5 rounds or less in a hunting rifle. This would mean that the SKS is automatically out of the running, but the MN is still a "go". I own three MN's one m91/30 and two m91/59's, plus an AK-variant. I can hunt with any of them because I have magazines that can go from 10 round to 5 round by changing the follower for the AK. If you want to use the 7.62x39 for hunting and you have magazine restrictions, look at getting an AK-variant or one of the many bolt-rifles in that loading. Quote:
As they suggest in the article, I'm modding my AES-10A into a Tabuk Sniper look-alike; check out my threads on it over in the AK forum neat pics, I promise.

JAC, There are 5 round magazines available for the SKS... .... I'm thinking, just for that reason. I still wouldn't hunt anything bigger than a Javelina with an SKS. I have to admit that I'm not a big hunter anymore, but when I was, I wouldn't think of using a lightweight ammo like the 7.62 x 39 for larger game like deer and elk. If my knowlege is up to date the Tabuk Sniper was designed for close-quarters sniping. Given my druthers the Draganov SVD 7.62 x 54R would still be my choice... especially for follow-up shooting throught walls and doors. P.S. I would own a Dragonov but the $695 price (+transfer fee as I don't have an 01-FFL) was just a little too high. I guess I will have to get by with the M44 w/scout scope or scope the M39 someday. Either will get the job done. There's a lot of both out killing deer each season. At <100m, open sights are fine, and there is hunting ammo for both.

Note: Wolf Military Classic is an HP round as well. Next Sunday is my first trip to the range in 5 months so the SKS, M39, and Natalia the "Blond Beauty" will all get some excercise. Almost missed all the nice weather. |

SVD's go for no less than $1500 (usually more) and that's if you're lucky to find one for sale. You might find a ROMAK-3/PSL for $800, but those are getting harder to find. They're also not true Dragunovs. They have an AK action and receiver, which all the original Dragunovs do not have (SVD, Tigr/Tiger, NDM-86). I realize it's an airsoft page, but this has a lot of good info: Unconventional Airsoft Dragunovs, and Dragunov Rifles in Airsoft . You can also check out this site: Dragunov.net - Choose Your Rifle . I really wish I could get an old style (not modern with the synthetic stock) Russian SVD as I've always thought they looked on par, aesthetically, with the H&K PSG-1.
